Me 262 photos on eBay - new pictures(?)

Hi Gents,

Another batch of five pictures from the same seller.
Plane seems to be the same on all pictures and I think we got a different one times ago. Here is the link:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/5-ORIGINAL-W...item337d0d339a

Regards, Franck.

Re: Me 262 photos on eBay - new pictures(?)

Hi Walt,

Thank you very much.
Can you tell more about your source(s) please? Already published pictures ? Any known markings and unit?
Thanks for your help.

Note: Erfurt was taken by Patton III US Army on 12 April 1945 and "given" to russians on following 3rd of July. No chance to have snow during that period. Do these pictures come from Russian soldiers? ( Seller says: "Taken by an american from the 17th Bomb group 34th Bomb squadron") Is there another Erfurt?
And since part of these pictures are known by our fellow members - part of at least - I just wonder why I've never seen any WNr. concerning that plane in these columns.

Regards, Franck.

Salut Franck,

Thanks to David E Brown over on LEMB, here is what is known on this bird;

(from Dan O'Connell's Me262 opus):

WNr.113345 - Me262A-1a. Flown by ferry pilot Ofw.Werner Dahlitz of FlÜG.1 at Erding on 12 April 1945, from 17:25 to 17:35. It was found abandoned by US troops at Oberschleissheim.

Greetings from Amman

Hi Marc,

(I "saw" you!) :)
Thanks very much my friend! Better like that. And it was produced in Leipheim factory, I know. :D.

Cheers, Franck.

I just hope there is no confusion with the following one!! (source vet site, original is far bigger).

Dear All,

Are we making too big an assumption that all of the Me 262's in these photos are one and the same bird? Even in the 5 on eBay, at least one appears to be different.

Regards,
Richard

Re: Me 262 photos on eBay - new pictures(?)

Hello Gents, Hi Richard,

Interesting; which one is different of the other four? (The one I did put alone being taken in Austria according the Vet site.)
...
And what about the two following pictures (Think eBay too but I'm not sure; maybe, most probably, one of those "exotic" sites pointed by Marc, regularly :)).

I think it's the same (thin white band around fuselage) too. In fact, I'm sure it is. I just discovered I had it.

Enjoy it, Franck.

Re: Me 262 photos on eBay - new pictures(?)

Dear Franck,

The first eBay photo was dark and it looked like there was no snow, which seemed to be in the others. Also, IIRC, the aircraft had been more complete, i.e., not with so many parts removed.

Your third photo showing an Me 262 up on wood supports appears to be a completely different aircraft - perhaps this is what you meant by your comment.

You comment about a thin white stripe around the rear fuselage. Of the 5 photos you present, only this one shows this feature. I don't remember what the eBay aircraft had, but I doubt that only one Me 262 ever had a thin white band around the rear fuselage.

I will admit, though, that the berm behind the aircraft was pretty consistent.

Regards,
Richard

Re: Me 262 photos on eBay - new pictures(?)

Concerning this "thin white band" - this is not a marking at all, but the position, where the joint between tail unit and fuselage is covered by tape and painted over with camouflage.
Tail unit and fuselage were delivered and produced for messerschmit by different subcontractors - oftenly by unskilled personnel - so the fit of the parts was rather bad and caused gaps which had to be closed.
Same goes for the joint between fuselage and nose unit.
If this tape is torn off by an accident or by excessive wear the unpainted or primer-painted surfaces appear which seem to form a thin tailband.
That´s the way how "Yellow 3" from 3./JG 7 shot down by AAA "received" its ominous tailband or III.Gruppe bar...

Roland

Hi,

Thank you Roland for this explanation.

Richard T. Eger 23rd October 2012 13:28

Re: Me 262 photos on eBay - new pictures(?)

Dear Roland,

I can't say that I buy your explanation. Note that in Franck's photo the band is rather clean cut. A sloppy tape job that begins to come off would leave a ragged appearing band. My thinking, further, is that the tape is applied first, then the body putty to make everything as smooth as possible. Putting the tape on last would, indeed, be asking for trouble.

I just checked a photo I have of Me 262, W.Nr. 111711 (T-2-711) and the putty was applied after the tape. You may recall this was a bare metal Me 262, so the seams are very visible. It is possible that putty was applied at the start, tape then applied, then a final overcoat of putty, but the point is the last layer was putty.

Regards,
Richard

Hi Lufquest,

Thanks for the links! Yes, seems to be (need to register to load them bigger?). We can read a small 711 Under tail section.

Re: Me 262 photos on eBay - new pictures(?)

Dear All,

The 2 links from Photobucket provided by luftquest are rather unique. I tend to agree, from what I can see of the number under the tail, that these are of "711", i.e., W.Nr. 111711, which became T-2-711. This aircraft shipped from Europe on 9 May 1945 aboard the "Madawaska Victory" (ref. telex of 30 May 1945).

But, 1 of the 2 photos gives the photo date as 16 Apr. 1945, meaning that the photos were taken of the aircraft in a disassembled state in Europe prior to shipping to the U.S. I've not seen such photos before and would like to contact the owner on Photobucket for possible higher resolution images. Can anyone help me make contact with him? Also, does anyone have an idea where in Europe the photos were taken?

Regards,
Richard

Re: Me 262 photos on eBay - new pictures(?)

Hi guys,

@Richard: I think just need to register to Photobucket, which I won't do. Anyway, the photo is so sharp that you can blow it up to 250% and you can read 711 under tail plane and on bomb rack, hence no doubts.

@Luftquest:
Last link is a HUUUUUUUGE GOOD surprise; at last!.. Well for me.
It does exist an article in "Le Fanatique de l'aviation" published during the 70s concerning the Me 262 tests in French Air Force.
Indeed, 113332 crash is depicted in Me 262 Squadron Signal Walk Around N°42; with a very sharp picture.
For the detail of these tests refer to Le Fana.
But, back to your link, it's good to see "Julie" on port side.

If you click on "Me 262 tag" you can get this one:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/jamesme...n/photostream/

Enjoy it!

Regards, Franck.

Dear Franck,

I did register with Photobucket, but found no way to contact the photo owner. Maybe I missed something. Can anyone help?

Re: Me 262 photos on eBay - new pictures(?)

Yes Franck, I almost fell out of my chair when I saw Julie. Glad that search is over!!!!!

I came across this picture of 711 during the tear down in germany but it isn't linking correctly. Do a google web search (not images) for Jafar278/CCF04132010_00000.jpg which will be the photobucket.com choice.

Re: Me 262 photos on eBay - new pictures(?)

Jafar link works pretty well; nice picture. Thanks Luftquest.

@Richard: If you click on login name you get the real name; not that much I'm afraid. Better with Flickr !!!!

Regards, Franck.

Re: Me 262 photos on eBay - new pictures(?)

Dear luftquest and Franck,

I tried clicking on the name, but no go. I also tried the Google search, but still no way to reach the supplier of these photos. I further looked around Photobucket, hit "Terms" at the very bottom - an indication of desperation - and at least got a support e-mail address. The first reply was robotic and of no help. No second reply yet.

This is pretty ridiculous.

Regards,
Richard

Re: Me 262 photos on eBay - new pictures(?)

Dear luftquest,

I did get your PM and have cleared some space there. My interest is in the 2 photos of W.Nr. 111711 supplied on Photobucket by someone who identifies himself as Geist762. I'd like to contact him to see if he might supply me with higher resolution images but, so far, even having joined Photobucket, I have not received any help in contacting him or even learning of his real name. It's not the end of the world, but it is frustrating dealing with a website so user unfriendly.

Regards,
Richard

Hi Guys,

Thanks Craig.

Richard, I think Luftquest PM is clear, isn't it?
So, normaly you got one email address, his name and his web site too.
His web site doesn't open for me (censored since he is nut for guns). He is USA-Squad forum member.
Did send a PM to him and will let you know if I have an answer. Be patient.

Regards, Franck.

Hi Luftquest,

I think, not sure 100%, I have another picture for the "dark" one but doesn't give answer.

Same thing for the third, high resolution too, but no clue either except we can think that the pic has been taken at Kuno I.

Be good, Franck.

Dear Luftquest,

I tried writing to the fellow who owns the pictures based on what you were able to find on the Internet regarding his name and e-mail address. Alas, my e-mail to him bounced, so I am still stuck trying to contact him. I do appreciate the effort you made on my behalf.

Regards,
Richard
