He115 shot down (?) night 19/20 June 1940
 

Hi guys

During Luftwaffe nocturnal sorties over the NE coast during late June 1940, a Spitfire pilot claimed a He115 shortly before midnight on 19 June that had been picked up on radar approaching Hull, presumably on ASR work.

I can't find any details of such a loss/engagement, but might it have been an aircraft of 3./106? One such aircraft had been lost two nights previously.

Any help appreciated.

Hi Brian,

claims on 19th/20th June 1940 off Yorkshire Coast

P/O. T.A.Vigors in Spitfire 1 (P.9324) 222 Squadron
claimed a He.111 near Spurn Head

F/O. J.S.Bell of 616 Squadron claimed a He.115 prob near Hull

pilot of 41 Squadron claimed a He.111 prob off Tees estuary

A He.115 of 1/K.Fl.Gr.506 was listed as FTR

He 115 from 1./506 was lost in the morning of 20.6.40 W of Smoela Island - the crew was last heard approx. 15 km NNW of Stadlandet - to Blenheim from no.254 Sqn.

I have the combat as 1937 hrs 20 Jun 40-Blenheims J & A/254 Sqn 'off Norway'

Robert - have you further details regarding 254 Squadron claim?

I can't find any reference in Andy Bird's Coastal Dawn.

Is a time recorded for the loss of S4+MH?

The combat is mentioned in one of Andy's appendices & credited to my research.

Robert says S4+MH fell in the morning of 20 June, so possibly not the 254 Squadron combat??

Awaiting more details if available.

I have only one He 115 combat for CC that day which is the one I mentioned before

Hi Brian,

my mistake, no a.m. but p.m.
Bell from 616 Sqn attacked He 115 from 1./106 S of Hull. The German crew dumped their bombs - it was targeting fuel storage tanks at Hull - and evaded.
