Re: Heinz Wagner. Me 110 M+BM PONDERS END
Hello,
There are at least two photos that I know of from this crash site, which was mainly just a water-filled crater in the sewage farm at the back of a housing area. No real identifiable remnants of the a/c visible to my knowledge. Regards, Larry Hickey EoE Project Coordinator |

Battle of Britain then and now states 4/ZG 76 but reading the RAF A.1.1.(K). 31.8.40 Doc. States....5/Z.G.76 and a paper found in the plane refers to this unit and to instructions for the 5th Staffel during an operation of the 11 Gruppe.
John, If you have any info on Heinz Wagner please let me know. I do have an Antique relic belonging to Heinz that i wish to return to his Family. Jeff |
Re: Heinz Wagner. Me 110 M+BM PONDERS END
The information regarding Wagner being Staka of 4./ZG 76 is held by Peter Cornwell.
Loads of documents were found by Intelligence Officers in Lw aircraft during the BoB, as security was rather lax in that direction. Also, what was in the 'K' summaries were sometimes guesses and shots in the dark. Also, they simply reproduced what was told them to them. He may have been in 5. Staffel at one time. Peter would need to come in on this one. |
Re: Heinz Wagner. Me 110 M+BM PONDERS END
Reluctantly. The Namentliche Verlustmeldungen for II./ZG76 confirms that Heinz WAGNER was Staffelkapitän of 4./ZG76 at the time of his death in action on 30 August 1940. The Genst.Gen.Qu.6 Abt. also documented the fact that when lost he was flying Bf110C (3257) M8+BM (i.e. 4 Staffel) of II./ZG76 - a fact denied to RAF Intelligence when they inspected the wreckage of his aircraft due to the nature of the crash. They were only able to determine the M8+B codes and correctly identified the Gruppe but were forced to deduce the individual Staffel based upon documents found in the wreckage. A.I.1.(k) Report No.350/1940 is quite clear on the matter. The wreck was inspected by F/O Peskett who phoned through his report the following day. He apparently failed to take adequate note of the white B on the upper surface of the wing which, at that stage in the game, would have been enough for them to correctly establish the exact unit.
