Info needed on Fw190 wreck located at Nordholz
Hi Guys,
I am trying to ID a Fw190 wreck that a US veteran took a photo of. I only have a photo of the tail area, and a BLACK 5 is prominent...followed by only the edge of another letter (why oh why couldn't vet's take a photo fof the entire code?). ;) Caption states: "Fw190 Nordholz, Germany July 10, 1945. During Hostilities, the 406th fighter bomber group, consisting of 3 squadrons 512-513, and the 514th, had a field day stafing and bombing this permament German airbase. I was in the 514th, 9th Airforce." Any ideas on this one?? Thanks in advance |

Hi there,
can you reveal any additional details? Are parts of the Werknummer legible or can you identify any Gruppe-symbol? Regards, Christian |
Re: Info needed on Fw190 wreck located at Nordholz
Hi!
Werk # is not visible, as the tail is wrecked... ;) Mike |
Re: Info needed on Fw190 wreck located at Nordholz
Mike,
are you sure that it is "Nordholz"? During 1944/45 only nightfighters from NJG 3 were based there. The Fw 190D-9 equipped II./JG 26 was based at "Nordhorn" until March 1945, this may be a better candidate for the destroyed Fw 190 fighter. |
Re: Info needed on Fw190 wreck located at Nordholz
so far,
this is the only photos I have. http://www.me-109.com/photo10.JPG The veteran documented EVERYTHING...so the location has to be exact. I do not know US historuy very much...did the 406th fighter bomber group attack this air base during the time he wrote? He brought back a large lot of instrument he removed from other aircraft he found at this airport...and many are from Ju88's (such as a Ju88 Fuel Gauge)...so NJG3 could be correct. Possibly this 190 was left there as a derelict? Mike |
Re: Info needed on Fw190 wreck located at Nordholz
Hi Mike,
thanks for sharing this photo - not the usual Fw 190, that's for sure :) The high tactical number normally indicates a training unit, but unfortunately none of those were ever stationed at Nordholz or even in the closer vicinity. However, if you look farther, some of the more northern-based training units, like SG 104 or JG 102, could have been the parent units of our bird, but that's pure speculation on my part! Regards, Christian |
Re: Info needed on Fw190 wreck located at Nordholz
could be a vertical bar, no? As opposed to a number?

Looks like a "1" to me. At least the small part visible above the maintenance opening gives this impression...

Re: Info needed on Fw190 wreck located at Nordholz
Thanks harrison987, this is really an out of the common Fw 190. The camouflage is really light toned (RLM 76 with some RLM 75 sprayed blotches ?). Could it be a NJG machine? As for the tactical number, I concur with Christian: "Schwarze 51".
Cheers Marc |
Re: Info needed on Fw190 wreck located at Nordholz
Hello Merlin,
A He219 of the I./NJG 1 was also found at Nordholz after VE-Day while this unit was never stationed there. Somehow 406 FG does ring a bell: I do still hope that some day a photo of this He219 pops up. All the best, Marcel |
Re: Info needed on Fw190 wreck located at Nordholz
Well...the vet took a lot of photos of aircraft at this field...which I will try to get. Maybe the He219 is there?
If I can get more info, I'll post it ASAP. mike |

Re: Info needed on Fw190 wreck located at Nordholz
Hello Mike,
That’s an interesting photo you posted. Without trying to be dogmatic, I would like to make a few points. First, note the slight difference in the gray values of the aircraft numerals (51?) and the all-black Balkenkreuz and Hakenkreuz. To me this suggests the possibility that the plane numbers are red, blue, or gray, and not black. Second, the sparseness of camouflage visible on the fuselage spine and fin, as well as the aircraft’s combination of all-black Hakenkreuze and black outlined Hakenkreuze, suggest that this may be an Arado/Warnemünde-built Fw190. HI Marcel... I acquired the remaining photos from the vet...and there are at least 3 He219 wrecks, as well as 2 other Fw190 and what a Ju88 G6. I will have them mid-week or so. When they arrive, I will see if there are any further inscriptions. I can definitely make out the following info & werk numbers: He219 +VL He219 +DL W. Nr. 211121 Ju88 G6 W. Nr.620547 (Stab NJG2 or 1/NJG4) Mike |
Re: Info needed on Fw190 wreck located at Nordholz
Hello Mike,
Wonderful news! The 211121 photo puzzles me, because according to my info, this He219A-0 was found at Münster-Handorf A/F but I will wait for the pictures first to jump to any conclusions. If you want to send these off board, please contact me at marcelhogenhuis(at)gmail.com Many thanks for your kind support! Marcel |
Re: Info needed on Fw190 wreck located at Nordholz
You are correct!
Captions on the back state Handorf... ;) Mike |
