Looking for ANY and ALL information on Unit 11/NJG5 that my Grandfather Otto Karl Tillack was in.

Would you happen to have any information about Unit 11/NJG5 my Grandfather Otto Karl Tillack was in that unit. The plane he was on on April 11th, 1944 was shot down and i was wondering if you had any info on that crash or pictures, or if you may have any information on the Unit he was in and or any pictures of he and the other men in his unit. the Pilot on the day of the crash was Karl Kades, not my Grandfather that day.
You may reach me or my Father which is Axel Otto Tillack"Camp" the son of Otto Karl Tillack via here or via our emails. Mine is: charlotterookswrites72@hotmail.com
and my Father`s is: alexrrcamp@gmail.com
Thank you in advance,
Char and Axel

Re: Looking for ANY and ALL information on Unit 11/NJG5 that my Grandfather Otto Karl Tillack was in.

I have an Otto Tillack, but with 8./JG 1, not a nightfighter unit.

Bf 109G-6 WNr.27023 of 8./JG 1, coded "schwarze 10"
Uffz. Otto Tillack KIA 30.Jan. 1944 near Zwolle in aerial combat with enemy fighters.

8. = Eighth Staffel, part of III Gruppe
JG 1 = Jagdgeschwader One, a dedicated home-defense unit, operational in daylight.

As to Kades, that one matches up:

Ju 88G-1 WNr.710458 of 11./NJG 5, perhaps still marked with its delivery code (Stammkennzeichen) BS+ZL
Pilot Ofw. Karl Kades KIA 11/April 1944 due to aerial combat during a transit flight. Bordfunker (radio operator) Ofw. Otto Tillack also KIA, Bordschütz (gunner) FSA (parachuted, name not recorded); location given as Weisswasser O/L. Jagen

Grm,
thank you so much for all of the information that you have provided me with. Can you explain what the delivery code means etc?
How might i be able to find pictures of the plane or any pictures of my Grandfather back then in his unit etc.
Thanks, Char

Re: Looking for ANY and ALL information on Unit 11/NJG5 that my Grandfather Otto Karl Tillack was in.

A delivery code is the code used on the aircraft when it left the factory after which it would be assigned a code relevant to its assigned unit.
As to photos, you will be lucky to track down someone who was with 11/NJG 5 (and is still alive) and who took a photo and noted the names. However, as your Grandfather was an Oberfeldwebel, it is probable that he flew with other units which might increase your chances-you will need to contact WASt or Bundesarchiv for this information

Just found out that my Grandmother was an Air Signals Assistant. Would there be any record of this anywhere?

11th Staffell 11/NJG5

Does anyone know where i might be able to get a list of this Squadron?
I was also wondering since my Grandmother was ALSO in the Air Force in Germany where I might be able to find a list of people who served in the German Air Force Female Auxiliary. Air traffic signals. Guess they were known as the Lightning Girls.
Thanks in advance,
Char

A list of what? Kills, losses, aircraft, personnel? Your Grandmother would be a different matter as lists of who would have served with her would be almost impossible to ascertain after 70 years

Chris

Re: 11th Staffell 11/NJG5

I believe Peter Spoden served with 6./NJG5 - but it would depend on the time frame. He's a member here...might be something, might be nothing. Just a thought really - thousands must have gone through NJG5 over the years though..

Re: 11th Staffell 11/NJG5

Chris,
well there seems to be two(2) Otto Tillacks. Otto Karl Tillack is my Grandfather and was killed on April 11th, 1944 in WEiswasser O/L . The other Otto was killed in Bussloo Holland . We are trying to find out where MY Grandfather is buried....I can`t seem to find anything. My Father was there in Welzow Germany in 1999 and was led to a mass grave with no dates just names on it. There he found the name Otto Tillak...NOT Otto Tillack. So we are wondering if that is the other one and NOt my Grandfather....I should write another book I`m telling ya lol

Re: 11th Staffell 11/NJG5

Peter Spoden has not been on this site for some time. In any case he was another Gruppe & Staffel so unlikely he would have known your Grandfather. As to where he is buried, German War Graves & WASt should be able to help-you have been given their links in another of your postings

A mere idle thought I'm afraid. As Chris quite rightly posts above Peter served in a different Gruppe entirely - night fighter wings were vast contructs with a huge turnover of personnel, so the chance of him knowing your Grandfather is frankly astronomical.

It would be like me picking a name at random from your local phone book and asking if you knew the person.

As noted the German War Graves and WASt are the avenues for further research.

I wish you the best of luck with it.

Probably the only avenues this late in the game. The two parties concerned were both ORs (enlisted) and the only wartime information that survived for them is in the possession of WASt.

Re: Looking for ANY and ALL information on Unit 11/NJG5 that my Grandfather Otto Karl Tillack was in.

Dear all and especially Char(lotte),

according to the "Namentliche Verlustmeldung" (i.e. the loss report issued by the unit and sent to the German supreme command), the "next of kin" person named is:

Ehefrau
Charlotte Tillack
Plümkenau O/S

At this period of war (spring 1944) it was still good practice, that the burial took place at the home-town of the deceased, i.e. the living place of the closest relative - in this case where the wife (+child/children) lived. If not married, where the parents lived.
This ist true for all dead, who died inside the "Reich" (Germany in its frontiers 1937 + Ostmark/Österreich/Austria + Sudentengau + Westmark/Alsace-Lorraine) and until ~ October 1944.

So ... a good place to search for the grave is: Plümkenau O/S (O/S = Oberschlesien / Upper-Silesia) - since 1945 called
Radomierowice, Gmina Murów, Województwo opolskie, Polska/POLAND . (50° 55′ 49″ N, 18° 1′ 55″ E)

If the wife only temorarily lived in Plümkenau, and if the family home address (also named as last home address on the loss report) was:
Wierschutzin, Krs. Lauenburg, Pommern ... since 1945 Polen,
this is the second best place to search. Here the polish names: Wierschutzin=Wierzchucino, Lauenburg=Lębork, Pommern=pomorskie, Polska/POLAND . Or uses the geo-coordinates: 54° 47′ 15″ N, 18° 0′ 13″ E

Good luck !
Most Kind regards,
Uwe / Karlsruhe, Germany
