Hello,
What model of Revi gunsight were mounted in early Bf109?
The mounted one thru a cut out in the windscreen.

Fran,

Early Bf-109's C,D,E's had Revi 3c or d gunsights and then the newer C/12 when it came along.

Check out pic 33 and 38 of this B model.

Thanks Mike,
In the foto 38 in the gunsight it is hardly readable 12D.
The logo seems to be the Zeiss one

Re: Luftwaffe Revi gunsights

Hi,

That's a C12/A not a C/12D, one of the very early C12 sights. The C12/C followed and was used in some Me 109, Henschel ground attack plane, etc. before the C12/D was introduced. In most cases the letter after C12 indicated just minor changes like improved lens system, different voltage (mainly for the Revi 3a,b,c,d series).

Roger

That's for the early Bf 109B (damn I can't get rid of the underline). The gunsight specified for that a/c was the Revi C/12 B. On later numbers of the B, and then on the C and D, the Revi C/12 C was specified.

Hope this helps,
George

I have a copy of a Messerschmitt Bf-109E3 drawing showing a Revi 3c as original equipment.

Re: Luftwaffe Revi gunsights

You might well have that. My info is from the armament manual for the 109B.
All the best,
George

PS. Actually it's kind of parthetic that the 109 cockpit was so small that you couldn't fit a gunsight inside it. They had to change the angle of the windshield from about 45 degrees to about 55 degrees to accomodate the gunsight. As Fran said, for the first 109B the company designed a windshield that had a square molded panel which provided extra room for the gunsight. But, in fact, it appears to have ended up in a second panel glued in front of the area of the gunside in the basic windshield to provide that extra room.

George,
That detail sounds very interesting. From what model of Bf109 started to
incorporate the 55 degrees angle? I am sure most of published line drawings did not takes in account that.

I found this, a lot of photos of a REVI C/12D:

I am learning a lot with this thread, thanks to all.

As far as I can tell, it took place early in the production of the 109B, and is easily seen by the removal of the extra glass panel ahead of the gunsight. And, it would appear that with the new windshield, the new gunsight was fitted.

It appears that the only external difference between the C12B and C12C gunsights was the lack of sunlight filter in the earlier sight, presumably because of the lack of room for it in the more streamlined windshield.

All the best,
George
