Displaced Persons Camp
 

Does anyone have any information about displaced persons camps? when my Grandfather was KIA in 1944 my Grandmother and my Father which was a baby at the time fled to a displaced persons camp. i was wondering how i might be able to get the records etc....

There were a number of Displaced Persons camps. It would help to know the location or the name of the nearest town. The organization handling the issue during the war was the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration. The records may be held by the United Nations headquarters or the German Archives.

i have been told that when my Grandfather was KIA that my Grandmother took my Dad which was only two months old and fled to a DP Persons Camp in Linz, Austria. Later my Father believes that he may have been in a Catholic Orphange till he was almost 5 years old then my Grangmother came back to get him and take him into Americ when it was safe. Again, I would love to inderstand why it was she felt she had to go there if she was German, but I don`t understand how it all worked back then......

Where in the old Germany did your grand parents and father live during the war?

Did they live in any of the eastern areas that the Soviets captured thus they may have fled from thsoe areas rather than be taken by the Red Army.

You would be best to contact the International Red Cross, they would have the records.

After the Battle magazine had an article recently about:
The International Tracing Service at Arolsen - The upheaval caused by Germany transporting hundreds of thousands of civilians from one country to another right across Europe presented a huge problem for the Allies in 1945. In January 1946 the Central Tracing Bureau was established under the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration. We tell how this was set up and run, and the effect it has had on many family's since.

not sure if this is relevent to your case however.

My Grandmother was working Welzow at the base there during the war as an Air Signals Assistant and my Grandfather was a Oberfeldwebel and a meber of 11/NJG5. He was on a flight on April 11, 1944 with Karl Kades as the Pilot that day and he was KIA. How the story goes is that shortly after that my Grandmother fled with my Father from the advancing Russian Army and they were in a displaced persons camp in Linz, Austria. Which one we are NOT sure of, but would love to know. My Grandmother placed my Father in a Catholic Orphange then supposedly and left to go make a better and SAFE place for them both. She cam back later and got him from the orphange and made passage to America. He remembers alot because he was there till almost the age of 5! She placed him there for protection. i can`t imagine how much love that took....
So......my Father would very much love to know which displaced persons camp they were in and how we wish we could find the orphange in whichh he was placed....

I have an ancestry.com account and I see in 1948 where you fahter arrived in the US? You may have this already.

Oh yes, I do have all of that information. i know that the displaced persons camp they were in was in Linz, Austria....however i`m not sure which one and how many there were in Linz and how I would get that info.

Since he was in the Luftwaffe, contact the Bundesarchiv. You will likely need some type of proof that you are related in order get the information you are seeking. During the war, Austria was part of the Greater Reich. Do you speak German?

Ed, Thank you for your reply. I will e-mail them as i do have proof as to who i am and of course my Father does as well, as it was his Father that was in the Luftwaffe as well as my Grandmother. I don`t speak German, but i know that I will need to learn how to....not an easy language to learn, but VERY worth while. I do have a way to translate documents, so that is a great help to me ;)
