Hello,
Great discovery, but do archeology with a backhoe ....... this is not very serious. You can also explore the pyramids with dynamite ....

Belle découverte mais, faire de l'archéologie avec une pelleteuse.......c'est pas très sérieux. On peut aussi explorer les pyramides avec de la dynamite....

Hello Archéavion

Is backhoe a 'binette' in French?

Some basic rules weren't followed (crops still there, dig above wreckage, too many watchers, etc.). Critics are easy but I recognize this isn't archaeology, me firstly for 15 years. Who makes archaeology in aircraft recovery?

It is sad this pilot wasn't identified.

Highly unprofessional, even for amateur wreck recovery. If this pilot remains unknown, than this kind of dig is one of the reasons why.

Completely agree with you.
But it is maybe not too late if they ask the help of the ANSA (Association Normande du Souvenir Aérien).

I think Zorglub on this forum was one of the organisers of this dig, and he may have some comment to make?

I think it is for those involved with the dig to explain or comment on the methodology.

As for the pilot, there exists the possibility that he may not be 'missing' even if remains have been found? Possibly he already has a grave? Who he might be is still the question, though.

I recognize some French 'pointures' at the dig

Whatever is said here , no comment .
Just...the " amateurs " were involved in DigWW2 and Spit XII recovery , and more . Some have hundreds of digs under the belt . We have many more projects here .
About the possible missing pilot , if identified , this will be posted here AFTER attempt to trace the family by the German authorities . Nothing more to say .

We are all 'amateurs', myself the 1st.

Best luck.

Zorglub - we wish you well in your quest to identify this pilot.

Re: Missing Fw 190 pilot found in Normandy

... the "amateurs" have found the WNr . So the pilot is now identified , but wasn't missing .
Maybe his name will be released here , maybe not .

In luftarchiv.de was said it's Fw. German Elflein, 2./JG 2, crashed 27.08.1943 with Fw 190A-6, W.Nr.550175. His grave is in St.Desir de Lisieux.

Thanks !
It is strange all the same. The press article spoke about the spring, 1943.
For the Werknummer, i have 530175, not 550175...what is correct?

Bonjour Fréderic,

the W.Nr. should be 530 175. A Fw 190 A-6 built at Fieseler Kassel.

Rgds,
René

Definitively WNr 550175 from the plate found in the tail .
Fw German Elflein was possibly shot down by return fire from 322nd BG Marauders .

Re: Missing Fw 190 pilot found in Normandy

550175 was built by ACO at Oschersleben .

We can even notice that it was fitted with a narrow head armor plate , which first led us to a A-3 or A-4 model .
There's a .50 bullet strike on the front side of that plate , hence the theory about 322nd BG Marauders .

A good result that this man has been identified and to know that he was not officially 'missing'.
