Me110C-4 - Burnt warning plate

Gents,

This warning plate was recovered by Ian Hutton in July 1993 from the crash site of a Me110 C-4 at Slacksted, Hampshire. The aircraft was shot down on the 15 Aug 1940, probably by RAF Hurricanes of 249 Sqn. Can anyone discern what the plate says? It is about 52 x 25mm in size and clearly very burnt. A German speaker may have a better chance of deducing what it is for:

There was also a crushed 7.92x57mm case recovered at the same site. Interestingly it is fired indicating it was possibly fired by the rear gunner? Any comments on this appreciated:

Thanks in advance,

Bjorn

On the plate, I can see

In the first row: Achtung!
In the second row: A _ _ e _ _ nderbau
In the third row: ................anlassen

Not a big help

Richard,

That's more than I could make out thanks for your help. Any ideas what the warning could be for?

Regards,

Bjorn

Bjorn, you might want to post that here:

http://www.luftwaffe-bullet-board.co...forum.php?f=11

It is a German WW2 airforce forum, you can ask your question in English, though you will need to register.

I linked you direct to the part identification page. Danny

I've just tried with paper and pencil but the shield is so encrusted it is impossible to get a rubbing. As to your assessment of what is said on the shield it is definitely:

Achtung!

??? Auseinanderbau
........ablassen

'Bei' Auseinanderbau would seem to make sense in the context of the later 'ablassen'...

Re: Me110C-4 - Burnt warning plate

'ablassen' was the KEY!! I ran to my Bf 110G-4 landing gear and found the same plate

ACHTUNG!
vor Auseinanderung
Pressluft ablassen

ATTENTION!
before Disassembly
vent Compressed Air

Von Lutz, you are truly a legend. Thank you! It makes sense as i seem to remember part of the landing gear was recovered from the dig back in 1993... Would it be possible to get a photo of the same plate and its location?

Bjorn

Re: Me110C-4 - Burnt warning plate

"Auseinanderung" is not a German term or word. It should read "Auseinanderbau" which means disassembly.

HTH! :-)

Re: Me110C-4 - Burnt warning plate

Gustav is correct for the plate from the Bf 110C which has "Auseinanderbau", but the original plate I have from a Bf 110G-4 scrapped in Denmark has "auseinanderung". My technical German Dictionary shows both terms with similar meanings.

Probably an old or locally used german term, never heard it before.
