RAF Mustang Victory credits List?
Is there a source detailing RAF victory credits for the Mustang?
Thank you in advance. Bill Marshall |
Re: RAF Mustang Victory credits List?
Bill,
Nothing published as far as I know. What do you need? Specifics, or generalities? ETO? MTO? Nothing in the Far East. Enjoy! Frank. |
Re: RAF Mustang Victory credits List?
Hello Bill,
RAF Mustang Information is very scarce but I think that you will find most of what you require in this Book - One of very few covering RAF Mustang Squadrons. "RAF Mustang & Thunderbolt Aces" by Andrew Thomas Published by Osprey Publications. ISBN: 978-1-84603-979-9 - This should be readily Available around the £12-15.00 mark. Look on Evil Bay if stuck :) I am always looking for anything on 122 Squadron - Mustang III or even rarer MkIV. All the Best - Keith. |

You might be interested to know that I have a copy of the unofficial 122 Sqn diary. No photos I am afraid |
Re: RAF Mustang Victory credits List?
Hello Chris,
That is very Interesting indeed! - Is it in Hard Copy or Electronic Format such as .pdf? - Would love to obtain a copy of this somehow? :) I have been very lucky personally in so far as due to the wonderful Help from People on this Web-Site & the archives of RAAF Point Cook in obtaining the Log Book of W/O Gordon Watkins a dear Family Friend who was one of 6 Aussies from 122 Sqn repatriated back to Oz in late 1945. Many thanks - Keith. |

Hello Chris, Is there something in the unofficial 122 Sqn diary about P/O Thorne? Thorne was killed at Velp near Arnhem, september 10, 1944. Mustang IIIB Regards Karl Lusink ARGA |
Re: RAF Mustang Victory credits List?
The diary is in 2 volume hard coppy.
Karl: for 10 Sep 44 it says: At 0903 hrs Flt Lt Wright took off with Sqn on an armed recce in the Zwolle, Lingen, Munster, Arnhem area. Again considerable movement was seen and after a hectic 3/4 hour strafing, the bag came to 6 engines severely damaged, 2 damaged, 2 small engines blown up completely, 3 tugs severely damaged, 1 tug damaged, 2 MET destroyed, 5 probables & 7 damaged. Unfortunately P/O Thorne DFC has not returned from this operation and it is hoped he may have baled out and is already on his way back |
Re: RAF Mustang Victory credits List?
Karl,
Thorne's biography was written by Olive Floyd and published by the family, as Pilot Officer James Neale Thorne, RAF, DFC, 1919-1944. Numerous copies are available online. I use used.addall.com to start searching, and then check abebooks.com. (for some reason, addall.com doesn't seem to search abebooks.com very well). Enjoy! Frank. |
Re: RAF Mustang Victory credits List?
Frank - I am interested in the grand total to be found in some magic repository I suppose...I have ID'd the ETO and working on MTO now. I have always been skeptical regarding the many 'on-line' accounts for totals simply because I don't believe that the research regarding the arrivals and ops dates for all AAF squadrons are as accurate as yours when the 51 replaced P-47, Spit, etc.. My foundation for AAF/Mustang vc's start with your Aces High and weave through various squadron histories for audit purposes.
Looking at MACR's has also been a 'good' marker for the P-51 operations dates. |
Re: RAF Mustang Victory credits List?
Keith - thank you. I will look for it.

Thank you Herr Professor

Re: RAF Mustang Victory credits List?
Frank - what was a Mustang IIa, IIIa and IVa ?
|
Re: RAF Mustang Victory credits List?
Bill,
Mustang I had .50 and .30 cal mgs, the Mustang Ia had 4 20mm cannon. I don't think there was a Mustang IIa. Mustang III was the P-51B, and the Mustang IIIa was the P-51C. Mustang IV was the P-51D, and the Mustang IVa was the P-51K. Enjoy! Frank. |
Re: RAF Mustang Victory credits List?
Thanks Frank - I was just picking up on your list categories and I had never heard of the IIa, IIIa and IVa but the distinctions make some sense. I wonder if the II and IIa were differentiated by engine modification?
|
Re: RAF Mustang Victory credits List?
Bill,
There is no Mustang IIa as far as I know. Just the Mustang Ia, IIIa, and IVa. Enjoy! Frank. |
Re: RAF Mustang Victory credits List?
I'm not familiar with the Mustang IIIA. I agree that it would seem to be a sensible designation for the P-51C, but it isn't mentioned in sources such as Aircraft of the Royal Air Force or Fighter Squadrons of the RAF. They are simply referred to as Mk.IIIs.

Re: RAF Mustang Victory credits List?
Graham,
As far as I can remember, I took the aircraft types from the squadron ORBs. Or possibly by double checking in Robertson's serial book. The Air Britain Serials list for HA-HZ does not appear to distinguish them. Enjoy! Frank. |
Re: RAF Mustang Victory credits List?
So they could be as official as the Spit Mk.IXB? That is, not at all, but a local terminology.

Re: RAF Mustang Victory credits List?
Hello
Not been on this forum for a long time but I have made a list of RAF Mustang claims some years ago by using the Sqn ORB etc & tried to match up the claims with known Luftwaffe and Italian losses. Have had help from members of this forum re losses and used info from published books and the Luftwaffe loss list at the IWM London. Thinking of sharing this info with members of this forum to get more info and corrections. Would any one have any objections with this ? would there be any copy right issues ? As I have put a lot of time into this would I get credit if this info was published ? how to protect it ? Over to you for feedback ! Regards David |
