JG 51 victories (Part 2)

I tried searching for my original post but couldn't seem to find it. If anyone notes a repeat in the future as I know someone has copied them let me know. There are a lot of Russian aviators listed as MIA and more of these are removed from the list every year and given a proper burial. Sometimes just an aircraft is recovered. I find some victories listed in Russian text. I'll try to list them here as related to JG 51. I'll list only the name of the "Soviet" pilot instead of the entire crew of bombers when I can determine them.

12 Oct 1941
Pe-2 57 SBAP (deputy AE co.) Lt. D.D. Gavrilov (bailed and survived) crashed at Medyn'. Attacked by 3 Bf 109 at Ilyinskoe (20 km west of Malyaroslavets).

Lt. Hans Boos Stab IV/JG 51 Pe-2 (46) 14:25 no location given.

This victory matches the Soviet combat mission time of the loss and this was the area that Boos was flying. No other pilots claiming Pe-2 during that time.

Another victory for the 12 Oct 1941. The Pe-2s for that day and area have been identified for Stab/JG 3 and Lt. Boos. Still nothing so far for Lt. Walter Schick 2./JG 51 Pe-2 (7) 13:32.

The source for these claims came from www.airforce.ru

Hptm. Hartmann Grasser Stab/JG 51 LaGG-3 (69) 12:05 PlQu. 47524 at 2500 m.

04 Aug 1942
Lt. Guenther Ruebell Stab II/JG 51 LaGG-3 (37) 12:25 PlQu. 47552 at 2000 m.
According to what I found there it stated that the LaGG-3 5 GIAP Lt. Ibragim Shagiakhmedovich Bikmukhametov rammed Bf 109 F-2 (# 9564). He then returned to his airfield and landed his damaged fighter. It indicated that this was Rueben's Bf 109.
In Prien's JFV 9/II it stated this 5./JG 51 Bf 109 went down in an air battle at Rzhev with the pilot unnamed at 100%. I ran across another post which stated that Onufrienko claimed his 15th victory on the 04 Aug 1942 but what kind of aircraft I don't know.

Based on a report of the 133 IAP for 10 Jul 1943.

Yak-7B 133 IAP (deputy AE co) Lt. Usam Abdrakhmanovich Mamin was heavily damaged but left the dogfight and returned to his airfield.

Yak-7B 133 IAP St. Serzhant Sergey Ivanovich Silaev (MIA) considering Beckh's PlQu. he either chased Silaev down or it should be 63662.

In this dogfight Lt. Vasiliy Savel'evich Novikov had a Fw 190 shot down off his tail by St. Serzh. Viktor Andreevich Leshchinskiy. Novikov then claimed to have shot down a Fw 190 on turning (Novikov's score list two Fw 190 NW of Ponyri-2 this day). The only known loss is the Fw 190 of Obfw. Hans Pfahler 12./JG 51 SE of Ponyri.

Returning to the 12.10.41 combats, I have found that Ml.Lt. Dmitrii Vasilevich Kokorev of 124 IAP was KIA. Can anyone confirm if this was Heinrich Kloepper's (11 JG 51) claim for an I-18 at 1605.

Additionally, Adolf Borchers and Bernd Gallowitsch (also of IV Gruppe) claimed PS-84/Li-2s just after midday. Were these from 7 DBAP? Crews of pilots Babayev, Penin, Butylin, Plakhov, Zaitsev and Kozlov all failed to return. could these have actually been TB-3s? One source credits Guenther Luetzow of Stab/JG 3 with claiming one of this type during the day.

Here is information concerning the beginning of post #8 before the 133 IAP arrived on the 10 Jul 1943. Slt. Lt. Aleksandr Konstantinovich Vinogradov of the 233 IAP had 8 Yak-7B covering the front line of the 13th Army in the region of Ponyri. They had a dogfight with 8 Fw 190 who left into the clouds but came back with 18 Fw 190. In the ensuing dogfight only two Yak-7B came back.

Hello Michael and Nick,
maybe I have some infos for the Pe-2 claimed on 12.10.41 by Lt. Schick:
On 12.10.41 from a combat recce assignment a crew of 2 APDR VVS-KA did not return. The crew consisted of Commander Ml. Lieutenant Pavel Aleksandrovich Berdnik, navigator St. Lieutenant Pavel Vasilyevich Pukhalskiy, gunner-radio operator Sergeant Valentin Ivanovich Komarov. 2 APDR operated a variety of aircraft – mainly Pe-2 – from Monino A/D in the Kalinin-Toropets area.
BTW which unit suffered from the attacks by Stab JG 3?

I seem to have from somewhere that Guenther Luetzow claimed a TB-3 during the day and Borchers and Gallowitsch claimed PS-84s/Li-2s.
Were these from 7 DBAP? Crews of pilots Babayev, Penin, Butylin, Plakhov, Zaitsev and Kozlov all failed to return. May have actually been TB-3s (as per Luetzow's claim)

Nick, your thinking about Luetzow's claims on the 14 Oct 1941 for 1 TB-3 (95) no time NE. Moshajk. I don't have but one more for Aug 1941 and I'm still waiting on more information. I have more coming soon on the 14 Jul 1943 but the German pilots gave all kinds of Soviet types except the ones they exactly shot down.

Re: JG 51 victories (Part 2)

Thanks, Nokose. I think that error stems from older info from the otherwise very good Petr Kacha website: http://www.luftwaffe.cz/lutzow.html

Other info that I have says he claimed 2 DB-3s and an I-61 on 14 October for victories 95-97.

On the Soviet debit side I have that the day's fighter losses include 164 IAP, Ml.Lt. Aleksandr Nikolaevich Feoktistov KIA whilst 186 IAP lost Georgy Afanasyevich Chernyshev KIA. Additionally, the Soviet bomber losses include at least one crew from 90 DBAP: Maksim Abdullaevich Abdullin (navigator/gunner) KIA; noting that 90 DBAP also lost Gregory Andreevich Bilyk (gunner as well). Same crew?

20 Aug 1941
Oblt. Johannes Missfeldt 7./JG 51 I-61 (7) 13:12 no location given but the only single claim for a fighter in this region. The other claims were earlier and for three fighters.

MiG-3 (#3543) 38 ORAE Kapt Viktor Dmitrievich Kozulya (POW) took off alone for a reconnaissance mission in the regions of Arkhovshchina, Krasny Bor, Smolensk. Kozulya was captured near Dukhovshchina. He told the Germans he was part of a Parachute Regiment, probably to make them think such a unit had landed behind the lines. He was involved in a revolt in 1945. The records for the 38 ORAE for August 1941 are few.

JG 51 victories (Part 2)

Hi guys

13 April 1943

Six Yak-1 fighters of GC 3 Normandie fly a fighter sweep in the Spas-Demensk area. These are attacked by four Fw 190 fighters and three pilots are lost (Lieutenant Raymond Derville, Lieutenant André Poznanski and Aspirant Marcel Bizien).

Feldwebel Rudolf Wagner 10./JG 51 Yak-1 (7) 14:13 45 574 at 1,000 m
Oberfeldwebel Hans Pfahler 12./JG 51 Yak-1 (2) 14:15 45 543 at 2,000 m
Oberfeldwebel Hans Pfahler 12./JG 51 Yak-1 (3) 14:20 45 572 at 1,800 m
Unteroffizier Martin Schamberger 11./JG 51 Yak-1 (10) 14:25 45 522 at 3,000 m
Unteroffizier Martin Schamberger 11./JG 51 Yak-1 (11) 14:30 45 542 at 2,000 m

The French pilots claim three victories but IV./JG 51 has only one aircraft listed as suffering engine trouble and performing an emergency landing with 25% damage that day.

Horrido!

Some more infos on 13.04.43:
Equipped with the excellent Yak-1 fighter french volunteers of GC Normandie (Major J. Tulasne) suffered their first combat losses – 3 pilots were KIA (Asp. Marcel Bizien, Lt. Raymond Derville & Lt. André Poznanski) in a combat between 6 Yak-1Ms and 8 Fw.190s ( from IV./JG.51) over Spass-Demiensk 15km behind german lines- whilst flying from Polotriani-Zavod, sw. Moscow. In return pilots of GC Normandie claimed 3 Fw.190s (including 1 shared by Poznanski, Derville & Bizien) destroyed although JG.51 recorded no personnel losses, but probably overclaimed with 5 Yak-1s s/d (maybe another Yak-Regiment was involved).

After this blow to morale GC Normandie was attached to 18 GIAP (Mayor Golubov), seeing more combat and morale improved despite the fact that in May low-level ground attacks had to be flown and another pilot was lost. Replacements arrived in time when the regiment was down to 10 pilots. It seems that GC Normandie was attached to 303 IAD (Gen. Zakharov) in June 1943 in preparation of the Battle for Orel.

Urusev of the 89 GIAP is attacked in this region and has all 7 fighters shot down. Among the losses are Yak-7B (# 3415345) Gds Ml. Lt. Ivan Semenovich Gaydamakin (KIA). This will have two JG 54 pilots listed among the victors. The Russian time is 17:30-1855 (M). The Soviet fighters appear to have been scattered in the dogfight.

1./JG 54 Lt. Gerhard Loos MiG-3 (25) 16:37 PlQu. 35 Ost/54442
15 (Span.)/JG 51 Maj. Marano Cuadra Medina Lagg-3 (1) 17:30 54339
15/JG 51 Oblt. Manuel Sanchez-Tabernero de Prada LaGG-3 (1) 17:35 E of Shisdra.
9./JG 51 Oblt. Maximilian Mayerl La-5 (57) 17:25 54277 (5 km N of Uljanowo)
" La-5 (58) 17:35 54418 (6 km SE of Uljanowo)
" LaGG-3 (59) 18:05 54462 (25 km ESE Uljanowo)
9./JG 51 Uffz. Rudi Meyer La-5 (20) 17:56 54251
3./JG 54 Obfw. Karl Fuchs (51) 18:11 54427

Recently I went back and looked at Christer Bergstroem's book "Kursk - The Air Battle: July 1943". I then did some follow up on the 15. (Span.)/JG 51 claims and there is another answer for their victories and losses. The two listed for them are supposed to be La-5 from the 18 GIAP flown by Lt. Pilipeyko and Ml. Lt. Borodavko (I can find nothing about them as KIA or MIA, so I assume they survived). Lt. Eduardo Garcia Amigo and Lt Manuael Sanchez-Tabernero de Prada were shot down and listed MIA. The latter evaded and later returned through the lines. So at least 2 Yak-7B from the 89 GIAP have unknown fates. The Soviet pilots claiming on the 15./JG 51 were Kapt. Vasiliy Terentyev and Serzh. Ivan Vasil'evich Stolyarov (his 1st of 8 career).

31 Aug 1943 Yelnya
Maj. Mariano Cuadra Medina 15.(Span.)/JG 51 LaGG-3 (7) 13:05 PlQu. 35 Ost/35374 at 4000 m.
Lt. Jose Mateos Recio 15./JG 51 LaGG-3 (3) 12:57 SE Yelnya at 4000 m.

1 OIAP "Normandie" has 9 Yak-1 covering Soviet forces at Yelnya on observing the approach of 100 He 111 and under escort of 20 Fw 190 which they attacked west of Yelnya. In the ensuing dogfight at 14:10 (Moscow) the Yak-9 (side # 0435) [Doesn't appear all were Yak-1] flown by Capt. Paul de Forges (MIA) is shot down west of Yelnya and also the Yak-1 of Aspirant Jean De Sibour (MIA). Capt. de Forges aircraft was recovered after the war but he is still MIA. His was possibly shot down by Medina as the location is west of Yelnya.

16 Jan 1943 Soviet Kalinin Front 293 BAD
Target: Burtsevo - Alekseekskoe
Pe-2 804 BAP Ml. Lt. Mikhail Efimovich Syromyatnikov (KIA)
Pe-2 804 BAP Ml. Lt. Nikolay Dmitievich Korolev (MIA0
Pe-2 804 BAP ?
Pe-2 804 BAP Mayor Vladimir Yakovlevich Gavrilov (Survived but shot down)
Gavrilov made it to the front line before bringing his plane down. He also claimed that his crew shot down two Bf 109 but IV./JG 51 suffered no losses and no damage to rate 10%. The 804 BAP had 7 KIA and MIA.

12./JG 51
Fw. Kurt Tanzer Pe-2 (22) 08:14 07553
Uffz. Walter Priess Pe-2 (12) 08:15 07581
Uffz. Gustav Müller Pe-2 (14) 08:20 07582
Fw. Wilhelm Mildner Pe-2 (2) 08:25 07533
11./JG 51 Uffz. Martin Schamberger Pe-2 (6) 08:25 07584

It appears that Müller was involved in the attack on Gavrilov but it was Schamberger who finished his bomber off.

Re: JG 51 victories (Part 2)

Hi Nokose,

I had these ones listed as

202 BAP, 263 BAD, 3 VA. This was likely the crew of Lt. N I Gapeenka bellylanded back at base; one other crew's navigator baled out, rest of crew apparently returned to base (slight overclaim)

as per http://www.allaces.ru/p/episode.php?id=569

While noting that the 2 Pe-2s claimed by II/JG 54 that date were listed as shot down several hours later...

Nick

Re: JG 51 victories (Part 2)

Nick,
Even thought this raid appears at the same time there seems to be a problem with someone claiming from what is described in Gapeenka's story. A "single" Bf 109 attack without a wingman which is possible would need a wingman to confirm or ground verification. 202 BAP or 263 BAD seem to have suffered no other losses this day. This leaves the 804 BAP. At best this would leave no over claiming by IV./JG 51 this day.

Reference the 4./JG 54 claims this day. They were part of Luft. Kdo. Don fighting in the Stalingrad sector of the eastern front.
