I know (thanks to David Brown) that it says "F1+DA" on the back of the original photo but KG 76 never reported a single Me 262 on strength that I'm aware of and never was at Giebelstadt. On the other hand, KG 51 was actually there in March 1945 and did fly Me 262s ....

They had a couple Nick, but usually they just "borrowed them".

It's just that they don't seem to have mentioned that to anyone in a strength return (or not that I've seen), nor reported losing any in air raids or otherwise ...

Nick, KG76 was only using them for recon.

No reason not to mention them! Interesting little mystery here.

Was KG76 using the Me262 for pre-/ post-strike recon? Do you know how many and since when KG76 used the Me262 in that role?

Thank you in advance and best regards

Michael

So, as yet, no wartime source for KG 76 actually having on strength, operating or losing an Me 262. All we have is what's recorded on the back of a photo that, unfortunately, does not show the unit code, only the "+DA" on the nosewheel door.

P.S. I do have some evidence of III./KG 76 using its Ar 234s for reconnaissance (as many Luftwaffe units would send a plane out e.g. to check weather conditions en route to a target).

Nick,

For the record, I attach a photo with the US Signal Corps caption typed below it via Richard Lutz.

Cheers,

David
