Gordon Gollob's ME109G?
1 Attachment(s)
Did Gollob fly a ME109G as Kommodore of JG77?
I've seen this photo of him examining what I believe to be a G-2 but I can't find any information about whether he flew one in combat. |
Re: Gordon Gollob's ME109G?
No, it is not a G2.
The locking latch on the Oxygen Filler door is an EARLY one...commonly seen on the E/F...but not on the G2. Mike |

Ah, thanks Mike. I was told it was a G-2.
Do these photos confirm that it's actually an F model? the photos were obviously taken on the same day. |
Re: Gordon Gollob's ME109G?
Photos on left confirms G model...photo on right, I do not know...'

Re: Gordon Gollob's ME109G?
There are other photos confirming this aircraft was a "G" and with JG 52, not JG 77

Re: Gordon Gollob's ME109G?
So these photos must have been taken during the period he was in acting command of JG 52 (25.7.42 - 31.8.42)
It's very puzzling that I can't find any propaganda photos that celebrate his 150th victory being that he was the first pilot in history to do so. He claimed 40 in August alone which is remarkable! |
Re: Gordon Gollob's ME109G?
Indeed it's a Bf109G-2.
Photo taken on 29 August 1942 the day he achieved his 150th victory. I'm not sure he was "acting" command of JG 52 since he was in Charge of JG77 since earlier May... But I don't know all and I, maybe, haven't the right book. (Source photo: eBay) I thought he just made his 150th in this plane, that' all. I don't have all necessary documentation. Correction: Hmm .... according to Holm's site he was acting Kdr of JG 52 effectively. Which is not indicated here: http://www.luftwaffe.cz/gollob.html. Note the machine has a III.Gruppe wave marking. |
Re: Gordon Gollob's ME109G?
Many thanks, I've not seen this photo before. Can I ask how you know it was taken on the 29th August?

Guys, I found some footage of Gollob in Die Deutsche Wochenschau, dated 8 July 1942. Starts at around 17 minutes in.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wm4k...CG9uqmbbqmy9dA I presume it's an F model? His 101st victory as mentioned in the footage was on the 20th May so it took the film makers just over a month to publish the film it seems. Just thinking out aloud but maybe the reason why there are no official photos of his 150th celebration was because the propaganda film crew had already been to film him in May and he was posted off operational flying in October? Der Alder has got him on the cover of the September 42 issue but there are no additional photos. |

Over 500 views but only a few posts.
What a waste of time this forum is! |
Re: Gordon Gollob's ME109G?
waste of time?
I am sure that if any of those 500 people had answers, they would tell you. You are asking for history of something where very little is known. |
Re: Gordon Gollob's ME109G?
Not nice thing to say about the forum, which has a long and proud history of assisting the Luftwaffe enthusiast with their plethora of queries. If you are unhappy with the level of response to your specific query, perhaps you can try your luck elsewhere.

Re: Gordon Gollob's ME109G?
Sorry, I didn't mean to insult the forum, just getting really frustrated with my research which has hit a dead end.

Re: Gordon Gollob's ME109G?
For what is worth, I am quite positive that I have seen a series of photos from this particular event in one of Prien, Stemmer and others series of books entitled JFV der Deutschen Luftwaffe 1934-1945, Volume 9/II or 9/III. If any of the forum members can check it, there should be the answer to your query.

Re: Gordon Gollob's ME109G?
Nice one Schirmmutze. Maybe you need to do what most others on this forum have done. Spent countless hours and money on research and then you'll discover the true meaning of frustration.

Re: Gordon Gollob's ME109G?
Reference is made to Jochen Prien's book entitled Messerschmitt Bf 109 F, G and K series - An Illustrated Study, page 64. "Major Gollob was the Kommodore of JG 77 in the summer of 1942, but from August he flew with JG 52 after three Gruppen of his Geschwader were widely scattered after the battle of Sevastopol, seeing the action between the central and southern sector of the eastern front, as well as in Sicily. Here he stands beside "Chevron 2", a G-2 of the Gruppenstab of III./JG 52, inspecting the consequence of an aerial battle (source: Petrick)."
