Unknown aircraft
Hi all
Can anyone help me identifying the type of this aircraft ? I have been told the following by witnesses, and please remember that this happened 70 years ago : On 4-1-1944 at 14:20 a aircraft was heard and seen approaching Mors island in Denmark. It ditched in very shallow water and continuet approx 20 meters up in a field. One engine was torn off and ended up further 20 meters up the field. The was no crew on board and no parachutes could be seen in the sky. The aircraft was a twin engined aircraft with two seats side by side in the cockpit. In each side of the cockpit was a door/hatch was leading out on the top of the wings. Aft of the cockpit was a bench in each of the aircraft. These were approx 1.50 meters long. On the right had side was found a door. When the aircraft had been removed by the Germans ammunition was found in the field over the next years: 7.98 mm and 13 mm or 20 mm. Any ideas about the aircraft type ? |
Re: Unknown aircraft
Could it be a Focke-Wulf Fw58?
|
Re: Unknown aircraft
Fw189 would be a contender
|
Re: Unknown aircraft
The Fw189 had a jump seat next to the pilot's seat but no benchs behind the pilot.

Re: Unknown aircraft
What puzzles me is the two pilot seats side by side, benches in the rear AND ammunition.

Re: Unknown aircraft
Could have been transporting the ammo.

Re: Unknown aircraft
Would Siebel Fh 104 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siebel_Fh_104 be a contender?

Re: Unknown aircraft
Just wondering would the side by side seating indicate the pilots seat and the folding observer's seat found on many German aircraft. If so would a He111 be a contender it has a sliding panel above the pilots seat and an opening cockpit panel by the observers seat which would lead onto the wing. Cant think of a door on the right hand side but perhaps a wrong memory, a transport He111 had bench seating if I remember correctly from the HE111 in the RAF Museum. I believe Ju88s converted to pilot trainers had side by side seating but not the other features described.

Gents
This is not easy as we rely on a 9 years old boy`s memory about 71 years later. As the aircraft was not in a good condition it should be found in the Quatermasters report. Bu no luck so far. |
Re: Unknown aircraft
Post No.14: Yep, it did. Thank you for the correction.
