Damaged plain in Larissa airfield
Hi,
I am trying to find information about this Do 17 Z. I can read it`s Kenn/Nr. as 5K+G..., that means III./KG 3. I suppose the airfield is in Larissa/Greece. The loss of such a plane is not registered in the lists of Qu.M. 6. Can any one help? thx Byron |
Re: Damaged plain in Larissa airfield
I have 3 photos of this crash and positive identification has eluded me I am afraid

Re: Damaged plain in Larissa airfield
Hello Chris,
it is 100% Larissa but i don`t know more about this crash. I have an other 3 pics of it too |
Re: Damaged plain in Larissa airfield
Byron/Chris: any clue at all on date?
|
Re: Damaged plain in Larissa airfield
Probably April 1941
|
Re: Damaged plain in Larissa airfield
For the unit there is listed the Do 17Z WNr. 3326 5K+GT, belly landed at Kozani on 16.04.41 with 30% damage.

Re: Damaged plain in Larissa airfield
So probably not Larissa which is 120 kms from Kozani?

Re: Damaged plain in Larissa airfield
I don`t know Merlin, i hope you are right but i have to check it regarding Kozani. I have an other pic, supposed in Salonika but it is n`t there, i know my city. What is your source?

Re: Damaged plain in Larissa airfield
I wasn't going to say anything, but now that Byron's latest pic captioned 'Salonika' has been posted, I will tell you: that mountain in the background of the first picture made me think immediately of the prominent peak to the east of Thessaloniki. It was nicknamed 'The Devil's Eye' by Tommys in WW1 because of the shape of an exposed seam of marble (maybe granite?) on the south facing slope.
Here are links to images on the web showing the mountain that illustrate it well enough: tp://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205297490 tp://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205297462 tps://www.flickr.com/photos/paul-mcclure/11023641843/ tp://i1.trekearth.com/photos/30171/macedonia_2_landscape_w.jpg The pictures are not mine, I just found them with a quick search. Hope this isn't a wild goose chase, but it looks exactly like the first picture when viewed from the road, which I do a couple of times every year. Bruce |

I think we talked about this plane back n January
http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showthread.php?t=40147 Now I looked deeper in some old scrap folders and found four sample shots of this plane from various ebay auctions, some very old. Interestingly, one I have marked as being taken at Korinth (probably because the seller marked it so), another at Lamia and third at Kozani?! However, there is only a proof for Kozani from the back of one of them. I think it is the machine mentioned by Merlin. Cheers, Boris |
Re: Damaged plain in Larissa airfield
Dear friends,
this is a nice summary Boris, thx. But what do we have now? what is our conclusion? Larissa, Salonika, Kozani, Lamia, Korinth, ... the moon?? We have to try more, me as a local in the first place |
Re: Damaged plain in Larissa airfield
I'd say it is Kozani, both because of the signature on the back of one of the photos, but more so because of the GQM entry, provided by Merlin.
Cheers, Boris |
Re: Damaged plain in Larissa airfield
It`s probably Kozani Boris but difficult to be 100% sure of it. There were 3 airfields there, 1) Karpero Kozani (800x700 m), 2) Petrana Kozani (Tsifliki) and 3) Servia Kozani (900x800 m).
I sow the loss on the 16th April 1941 in the GQM entry, it is without Kenn-Nr., that means uncertainty. 16.04.41 Do 17 Z (W.Nr. 3326) 30% Bauchlandung Kozani The signature on the back? We have more then this location. There is still a lot to research about the physical environment of ~140 Greek airfields during the war in order to make the recognition easier. Many of them are farmland today. I`m trying. |
Re: Damaged plain in Larissa airfield
It's sure for 150 % near Petrana Kozani. Go on Google street view on this position: 40.286196 N, 21.824401 E (it's an little crossing of two sand ways in the west of the airfield, then have an look to West and you see the same mountains like in the pictures).

Re: Damaged plain in Larissa airfield
These are good news Rasmusen.

And now have a look on the picture of the first posting or the summary from Boris ... |
Re: Damaged plain in Larissa airfield
Ganz feine Arbeit geleistet, besten Dank Rasmussen
No doubt any more about this Ghost plane, it is Kozani Byron |
Re: Damaged plain in Larissa airfield
Well, after so many photos of this plane, it was about time to solve this out, through major joint effort, like in the old times of TOCH :)
