Re: Interesting on eBay
hi,
these machines flew for the deutsche botschaft in spanien. but on board were luftwaffe-men in civil clothing. you can guess what they were doing there... interestingly they had different codes for one and the same machine. the he 111 25-100 was sometimes painted as d-ahoj and as m-cabs. 25-101 even had sometimes a stkz: sg+qw! i have a fb of a crewmember, who flew until 1943 with these machines (they used ju 52, too). all the best jim |

Jim
Very, very interesting. When you say Botschaft what exactly do you mean? My dictionary state it is either Embassy or more sinister Intelligence. My guess is that the three aircraft were delivered with German civil registration to Spain plus perhaps one with STKZ SG+QW (can this be confirmed?). One photograph shows two He 111 with civil register D-AHOJ and D-AFFU(?), but are they really of the early version? After delivery they were either stripped of paintwork or re-painted as 25-100 to 25-102 and finally incorporated in a special Spanish register M-CAxx. Possibly it was the other way around. Anyone who has more details? Cheers Stig |

Re: Interesting on eBay
hi,
sorry for writing german. the fb is stamped and signed by the embassy, luftattache abt. w. maybe this points to wetterflugstelle, because they often had an eye upon the weather during their flights. and they flew around spain, sometimes to look after ships in the med. the machines were newly painted, when they were flown to germany. and again before their way back. maybe because they used the machines not only in spain! all the best jim |

Re: Interesting on eBay
Noteworthy the mix of insignia on these planes.
Military fuse codes: 25-nnn and civilian insignia on tailfin/rudder (should sport a St.Andrew cross with that code). There is a good article in Air Enthusiast No.77 (Sept-Oct.1998) about the He-111 career in Spain with mention to these activities. Some WNr's. are given. Best Fran |
