Single KG30 aircraft attacks Bridlington 11 Jul 40
At DBST 11:05 'a single German aircraft' bombed Bridlington on 11 July 1940. I guess it may have come from KG30. Checked The Narrow Margin but it makes no reference to it.
With thanks in advance Andy Bird |

Andy, have you checked Battle Over Britain by ATB?

Re: Single KG30 aircraft attacks Bridlington 11 Jul 40
From the RAF online Battle of Britain Campaign Diary:
Between 0600 and 0900 hours a number of raids by single aircraft were carried out between Yarmouth and Flamborough Head and inland. Bombs were dropped at several places including the Royal Engineer Headquarters at Melbourne in Derbyshire, and at Bridlington where a truck containing ammunition was blown up. |

Andy,
Excerpt from the EoE translation of the Heinrich Weiss manuscript for 11 July, which was a very complicated day of activities for the Germans: "A He 111H of II./KG53 attacked the railway bridge at Bridlimgton with 2 SC250 and 5 SC50 bombs (explosions were seen within the target)." This is probably the incident to which you were referring. Hope this helps. |

Thanks to all of you who replied.
The ARP report indicates considerably more damage than I've seen written. Regards Andy Bird |
He 111H of II./KG53 11/7/40
Would anyone have the rank, surname of pilot who flew this hit and run raid against Bridlington on the morning of 11 July 1940 ?
Many Thanks Andy Bird |
Re: He 111H of II./KG53 11/7/40
Wouldn't call it a hit and run raid-more like a Störangriff

Nuisance attack - translation sums it up . . .

Re: Single KG30 aircraft attacks Bridlington 11 Jul 40
Good evening, I am doing some research and with the aid of Google I find my self posting on this forum as a new member for the first time.
I live in Melbourne Derbyshire and am researching the bombing of our village back in 1940, 11th July to be exact. My grandad has a great account of the plane coming into the village as he was out in the fields returning from checking his fishing lines. Also on my dads side my grandma was at work in Derby when the air raid sirens went and leaving her army uniform making factory she also witnessed the plane fly over head on completion of the bombing. Both witnessed this plane so low grandad said he could of hit it with his catapult and could see the pilot. So I was wondering if this could of been the same plane. I'm not so sure as the Melbourne bombs (8 in total) were dropped at 7.55am. I've just purchased a book about this and it has some good accounts of the raid. Any help would be much appreciated |

my Grandad witnessed the plane coming over Melboune, he could see the pilot it was that low, also my grandma on my dads side was at work in Derby and watched it fly over also very low, both still alive today and remember it like yesterday. I know it was the HQ of the Royal engineers that was bombed. Would this be a significant target and the training depot was at kings newton. a similar bomb pattern as to the Bridlington bombs was in Melboune. I live opposite the site of the first couple of bombs which didn't make a lot of damage. Assuming these were c50s. It was always said they were after rolls Royce as it had Melbourne pool and church painted on. I personally think the Royal engineers HQ would be a good first target and also ammo depot's maybe in tutbry, burton and Bridlington.

Bombing Melbourne Derbyshire. RE HQ. 11th July 1940
Hello,
I am doing some research into the bombing of Melbourne back on 11th July 1940. My grandad (12 at the time) witnessed the plane flying extremely low over head, he could see the pilot it was that low. Also my grandma on my dads side was at work in Derby, she worked at a uniform makers on drewry lane Derby, she also witnessed the plane flying over Derby. Both still alive today remember it like yesterday. My grandad describes what I believe to be a Dornier, flying towards ashby. My grandma remembers a swasticker on the tail and also yellow at the rear. The plane dropped a number of bombs and killed a number of soldiers at RE HQ on church stree. Also a number of people were also injured. I also found information on a engineer killed by train in the panic later that day. I would love to find more info on this and I know that there was a plane heading to burton tutbry to bomb the ammo depot there. A plane shot down off Cromer which bombeda bridge at Bridlington. The ammo depot there and hit a bridge killing 5 with 2 c250 and 5 c50 bombs. Can any one help further Regards andy |

Re: Single KG30 aircraft attacks Bridlington 11 Jul 40
Favid Smith has written a great book from eye witness accounts on that day. You can order a copy from his website. http://www.melbournederbyshire.co.uk
