Information About Wilhelm Frös

Hi guys

I am wondering if anyone would have any information that they would be willing to share regarding this Zerstörer ace that served with III./ZG 1, II./ZG 26 and later JG 6. I have a photograph of this fellow, five victories claimed while flying Me 410 twin-engined fighters with II./ZG 26 and two loss list entries. However, I know nothing about when and where he was born, service with JG 6 and eventual fate. I understand that this is quite a long shot but anything would help.

Horrido!

Leo

Hi Leo

Sorry, but have no date of birth. However do have a little additional information.

On 26th August 1943 he was injured when he belly-landed his Me410 whilst flying with 8./ZG 1. On 21st June 1944 he was severely wounded in hius Me410 in the region of Neubrndenburg, his wounds were such that he never returned to combat, but did join EJG 1 towards the end of the war, which he survived. This might conflict with your JG 6?

Had five confirmed claims:-

24th February 1944 B-17 near Hoya at 1315 hrs
6th March 1944 B-17 in the Brandenburg area at 1315 hrs
11th April 1944 B-17 SSE of Stettin at 1240 hrs
20th June 1944 B-24 over Rugen at 0920 hrs
21st June 1944 B-17 NW of Neubrandenburg at 0940 hrs

First three with 5./ZG 26, last two with 6./ZG 26, all as an Oberfeldwebel.

Kind Regards

Johannes

Hi guys

Many thanks for your responses. I recall John Manrho stating that he served with JG 6 but it may very well be that eventually he ended up with EJG 1. Too bad that there is rather little detailed information about this fellow but I greatly appreciate your input!

Horrido!

Can not help much here. Willi Frös was born in 1915 and passed away on 12.06.2003. Unfortunately he did not respond to my efforts to contact him some years before his death. He was already ill then I am told. Also his relatives did not want to help me..... so my knowledge is also from bits and pieces. Until now not a lot of data. I have no proof he really flew with II./JG 6 at all. In fact from June 1944 till May 1945 there is no hard data. I read the EJG 1 on the internet somewhere also, but never saw any proof......

John

Ps. I have 5 Abschüsse too....

Hi John

Many thanks for your reply. It is unfortunate that you were unable to obtain any additional information on this fellow from his family but I suppose that they had their reasons. Could you please look at this photograph where he appears with Bordfunker Feldwebel Brand in spring 1944: https://reibert.info/attachments/4-jpg.3884843/ He is the fellow on the left, correct? What ever happened to the book on JG 6 that you were working on?

Horrido!

Hi John

Many thanks for your confirmation. I am very glad to read that you are still working on the JG 6 book. For some odd reason this is one of those units I have a particular interest in so it is great that it is still in progress.

Horrido!

Hi John

No problem! In fact, I was thinking that he was the fellow on the right since he is the one with both the ribbon of the Eisernes Kreuz 2. Klasse as well as the Eisernes Kreuz 1. Klasse.

Horrido!

Johannes, I can (albeit a little late) some additional infomration on Ofw. Willi Frös;

Actually, he was only lightly wounded on 21-June-1944 and was in action the following day, claiming a B-17 NW of Neubrandenburg at 0940 hrs. I have him on continued operations with his regular Bordfunker Gerd Brandl in 6./ZG 26 until 17-July-1944; from that date Brandl flew with a Lt. Tauscher although, I have nothing on Willi Frös from that date forward.

I can also confirm that the linked image does indeed show Brandl on the left and Frös on the right.

Better late than never.

Regards Richard.

Re: Information About Wilhelm Frös

Richard, the claim was on the same day June 21st, but indeed he was only slightly injured on 21.6.44. At the end he was with IV./JG 3.

A (very annoying) date error on my part John.

Slightly off topic from Frös; do you have any information on a Lt. Tauscher of 6./ZG 26 who flew with Fw. Brandl from 20-07-1944 at all?

Regards Richard.
