ED, the 262 is 111728 Me 262 A-1a/Jabo. Found unpainted at Neubiberg at the end of the war. The last three digits of the W. Nr. were found on a bomb pylon and on the rear of the fuselage. Additional photos show that a Hungarian 101st Fighter Group Bf 109 G ‘Red 12’ had been dropped on it by Americans in charge of the scrap yard. Possibly W. Nr. 113728.

There is a controversy regarding the depicted Hungarian '109. The side number appears to be painted 'grey 12' (colour variously given as yellow or red), at least that's my opinion. It's actually a G-10/U2, possible W.Nr. 613169 (also given as 612769 or 612169).

I apologize for my ignorance in this matter, but what is a G-10/U2?

Re: Photos 3-25

Greetings,

Regarding the photo of the Bf 109 atop the Me 262 at Neubiberg:

My research indicates that this Ung. JG 101 aircraft is Bf 109 G-10/U4 WNr. 612 769. I have unpublished photos in my collection that support my contention. Further, my database files only list G-10/U4s from 612 712 to 612 819. I have no entries anywhere near 612 1XX.

Finally, I find it interesting that someone can sell one of Merle C. Olmsted's photos on Ebay!

An interesting comment, do you mind if I ask for an explanation of it?
Thank you also for your giving the sub-type of the G-10 as U4, U2 sounded a bit strange.

I thought that was rather odd also, that one of Mr. Olmsted's photos would be on EBay.

George,

Perhaps I was shooting from the hip. But I must admit to harboring some anger at the way Merle has been treated over the years. His photos have been used and misused hundreds of times by various authors and web sites. He rarely gets credit for the photos he took, and in fact, some people even claim his photographs as their own. I just find it offensive that someone I making bucks off of his work (and yes, I am a capitalist).

Anyway, I guess I was just venting.
