Name of a village near Rschew
Hi all,
Attached is a scan of the back of photo. As far as I can make out it reads "bei Roro???? (Rschew)". Can any one identify this village near Rshew? Thanks in advance, Rudi. |
Re: Name of a village near Rschew
My immediate thought was BORODINO, ENE of Vyazma and SE of Rzhev.

Re: Name of a village near Rschew
Seems to be:
village Rorowino ??? |
Re: Name of a village near Rschew
in the Russian no basis word "Roro ..."
May be "Korovino" - NW Rzhev Regards, Kirill |
Re: Name of a village near Rschew
The first letter is a Sütterlin "K"; the last a sloppy Sütterlin "o". I would go for written "Korowino" which would confirm Kirill´s reading.

Re: Name of a village near Rschew
Korovino
There are at least 36 of them in Russia. This is the only one I could locate in Tver Oblast, which is the same Oblast where Rzhev is located: - 173 km ENE of Rzhev and 46 km NNE of Klin at 56 42 52 N – 37 01 14 E. It appears to be just about the furthest point of advance of 3. Panzergruppe on 5 December 1941. L. |
Re: Name of a village near Rschew
Sorry, but "коровы" (cows) in the Tver region is not less than the cows in Texas...

Re: Name of a village near Rschew
So Korovino it is. Thanks everyone for your help. Very much appreciated.

Re: Name of a village near Rschew
The writing was on the back of a photo of a belly landed Ju 88. Attached is the photo concerned. Some other photos of the same aircraft have been seen with the landscape covered with a thick layer of snow. Most likely this Ju 88 belly landed early 1942.
Attached is a scan of the back of a second photo of the same a/c. Can anyone read what it says there? Regards, Rudi. |
Re: Name of a village near Rschew
Open terrain, rolling hills, no tree line in sight and the aircraft sitting on the ground with no snow...the region around Rzhev was covered in snow from November 1941 to April 1942 and largely forested. Multiple photos, but is there an ID on the aircraft ?
Without more info on the aircraft and assuming it is in open space near Rzhev my guess it is near Korobino, to the SE of Rzhev, and 6 km south of Zubtsov. This place was in German hands until the end of July 1942. Oquaig |
Re: Name of a village near Rschew
Hi oquaig,
The Ju 88 concerned is B3+AP of 6./KG54. Attached is a photo of the a/c in snow covered area. Regards, Rudi. |
Re: Name of a village near Rschew
What does the script "Zerstörer" on the backside mean?

Unfortunately I don't know the WNr.

Re: Name of a village near Rschew
Unfortunately, I have only a very fragmented loss list for KG 54. Maybe some one else out there can fill in the blanks for us. At best all I can say is that this aircraft was brought down some time in the late winter-early spring of 1942. oquaig

Re: Name of a village near Rschew
WNr 1696 was a Stab II./KG54 a/c so that one was coded B3+?C. I think WNr 3649 is the best candidate for B3+AP. To be certain we have to wait untill a photo showing the WNr will appear on eBay.

Re: Name of a village near Rschew
Hi,
Northeast 20 km of the city of Zubtsov (near the river Volga), we found the crash site of a Ju-88. Found a piece of plastic marked with signs (in pencil) the type of aircraft "...88" W/N "21 ..." or "...91" or "..218" or "918"... And even in the area of the Rzhev-Zubtsov-Sychevka found another Ju-88. Luke 50*80 cm - filled with W/N 6626 of the aircraft (?) . it's 1941-1942? Do you know of a suitable loss in the area? regards, Kirill |
Re: Name of a village near Rschew
Here is a little more.............
Two missions were carried out in the heavily contested area around Rzhev on 04.03.42. The first mission of 25 Ju 88s claimed the destruction of 18 trucks. The second mission of 11 Ju 88s claimed 2 field guns and 5 trucks destroyed. Three Ju 88s were totally lost and 1 more was heavily damaged due to concentrated Flak and fighter defenses. Ju 88 B3+?P (3649) lost an engine from a Flak hit and made an emergency landing in German-occupied territory. The Ju 88 B3+AM was shot down in Russian territory and the crew reported MIA. Ju 88 B3+IM made a forced landing after being shot up by fighters and the crew returned safely and unwounded. Ju 88 B3+BC from the Stab was shot up over the target area wounding Lt. Hanak-Hammerl but managed to return to base where it made a belly landing. [RADTKE, Siegfried. Kampfgeschwader 54. 1990. ISBN 3-88014-098-7. pp. 135 and 139.] L. |
Re: Name of a village near Rschew
Thanks for the info, Larry. Very much appreciated. Looks like WNr 3649 is the best candidate for B3+AP.
