Walter Oesau

Hi there!

Does "Gulle" - Oesau's nickname - mean anything?

Thanks in advance.

Chris

Re: Walter Oesau

could it be Gülle?

– The_Fritz Jun 27 '12

I don't what you think, but if your nickname was "shit" you'd probably not have appreciated!

You have to know how germans use swear words.

Chris,

the word/name Gulle has no meaning, it's just a nick name that came about somehow; since we cannot ask Oesau's family or friends any longer, I'm afraid it will remain a mystery.

I do not buy the Gülle / dung theory at all. To the contrary, I find it rather devious and unrealistic.

I share the same opinion.
Thank you.

The military : lots of people, lots of names to remember, same suits, how to ID an individual?
Imagine I am one the mob, and when asked my opinion on a subject or another I use frequently an expletive related to manure from male cattle.
Guess what nickname I'm going to earn ?

Well of COURSE you know I'm gonna respond. Ha.

It may also be a huge play on words - Oesau is close in French to "Oiseau" or "Bird"

In actuality, though, it is from an old Northern German story for kids. Gulle and Ille. Search around the forums here and you'll find it. I'd start around 2006 and go from there.

Edit: I'll spare you the search.

Guys, I think we've gone off thread subject. Let's stick to Walter Oesau or start a new thread.

Post No.9 refers. Just a brief note to say thank you to Red Baroness for the interesting background info on Oberst Walter Oesau's nickname.

It is well documented that Jagdgeschwader 3 received the honorary name Udet by order No. 1870 of 1 December 1941. Could someone perhaps shed some light on the order number, if any, and date when Jagdgeschwader 1 received the honorary name Oesau? I read many references on the subject, but none of them is specific in this respect.

Regards,
Sinisa

Interested to see how this man correlates with Walter; never heard of him myself. And if the photos are of Walter, would also love to see them.

As for the naming of JG1 into "Oesau" - I do not know the order number, but it was after Walter's death, so it would have to be mid to late 1944.

Apologies for my abruptness; little Wally has given me his cold he caught at school.

Hi Cori,

I'm not surprised to find you here, in this thread. :)
I'm not able to read the book extract but - to make short - does this mean (do you mean) that "Gulle" is one form of the English "Gull" ???

Regards, Franck.

Yes, it would surely have been mid to late 1944. Or, perhaps, in view of the German army effective collapse in the west (i.e., invasion of Normandy and its aftermath) and in the east (operation Bagration) shortly after his death, it did not happen at all.

Hi Franck!

I think it would be more like "Mutt and Jeff" or "Max and Mortiz", "Frick and Frack" - something like that - kind of a moniker meant to describe someone who might be considered a "country hick" sort of person or "good ol boy."

Re: Walter Oesau

As an aside, Oesau designed the "flying 1" symbol for JG1 back 12 November '43.

Maybe our forumite Baer biographer may know of the date of the addition of the Oesau suffix to JG1? I can dig around and see what I can find from my sources and get back to you all in a week or so.

Thank you, this is a terrific info, the one I have been looking for a long time.

Would you be in position to give the reference (i.e., your own research, reference in the literature or the like) for the aforementioned date of the emblem introduction when/if you find the time to do so?

Regards,
Sinisa

Hi, sorry it took me so long to respond and I'm afraid it'll take a bit longer, as all of my books are currently packed away as I'm in the process of a move. I DO believe it was in one of the Osprey Manuals, but I can't remember which one.

Apologies again for the late reply,

Cori
