German aircraft down in the Ukraine - 1941

Hi all,

Attached is a scan of the back of a photo. As far as I can read Sütterlin, the inscription says:
"Verunglückter Deutsche Zerstörer an der Strasse ??? ???
1941 ???"

Something like "downed German destroyer along the street ????"

Can anyone read the rest?

Thanks in advance,
Rudi.

if you try and upload a low-resolution copy of the photo in question, perhaps you might still receive some feedback.

The first town is "Zwiahel" now Nowohrad-Wolynskij (50° 35' N, 27° 37' E) ...

Here is the photo concerned, Sidney. It's an eBay auction photo of Ju 88 B3+BH of 1./KG54. It's a well known a/c. Several photos have appeared on eBay in the past.

Rudi.

Thank you for identifying this city, Rasmussen. Very much appreciated.

Am I correct in thinking that the 2nd city starts with Eg??? And can anyone identify the last word, the one after "1941"?

Thanks in advance,
Rudi.

The second town ... only an guess ... the second letter is an "h", the third an "i", the fourth an "t", the last an "z". Between the "t" and the "z" is an second "i" and an "o" (maybe). I'd think it's the Polish name for "Shitomir" ... "Zytomierz" in an somehow strange spelling.

-> Schnautzer,

Back in 2010 I asked if anyone had more info concerning this belly landing (date & WNr). With the text on the back of the photo in post #1 I was hoping to pinpoint the exact place where this a/c came down.

Regards,
Rudi.

With Zwiahel (Nowograd) the W.Nr.1210 could fit ...

The writer noted "Shitowiz" whatever he wanted to say...

Please take into consideration the Wehrmacht moved into an area with several languages where a Belorussian, Polish, Ruthenian and Jewish population used their own designations. The German maps were based on older maps from WW1 with kyrillic names - remember Poland was Tsarist-Russian until 1917 - with German transcriptions. Nowadays the area is Belorussian and written with kyrillic letters, whose english transcription may be totally different.
The common soldier may not have had a map with correct names so he wrote what he listened from his officers. And oftenly he may have written from memory when he wrote his captions after processing his film many weeks after having taken the photographs...

Thanks everyone.

Looks like this a/c came down along the road between Nowohrad-Wolynskij and Shitomir.

Does anybody know what the last word on the photo means?

Regards,
Rudi.
