Re: KG 200 Pilot’s
There is a prisoner of war interrogation reports that speaks of plans for FAG 123 to use a captured P-47 on reconnaissance over England. I think you will find earlier discussions about that on this forum.
In the Summer of 1944, KG 200's operational flying units were undertaking transport duties. Some of those transport missions used captured aircraft like the B-17 (in Greece) and French flying boats (in Finland); many others used the Ju 188 and He 111. The organisation of KG 200 is well known and it did not have a fighter Staffel although later it used Fw 190 F-models as bombers. Two good books on the subject are "Moskau ruft Heeresgruppe Mitte" by Dr. Günther W. Gellermann and "KG 200, the Luftwaffe's Most Secret Unit" by Geoffrey J. Thomas. |

I also like "KG 200: The True Story" by PW Stahl.
After all, he was there! |
Re: KG 200 Pilot’s
Jump over to the LEMB and look up this subject of a captured P 47 strafing U.S. troops, nothing ever came of this in the way of concrete evidence as I remember....perhaps a fairy tale?

Hey Nick, I would certainly buy into the thought you have mentioned here.

Last summer I had a meeting with US-and RAF-pilots in England. One former B 17-pilot insisted in public that he has been attacked by captured mustangs flown by German pilots with US-markings. I protested, that this was not our behaviour and asked him to send me details from USA. He never did. herzliche Grüße Peter Spoden |
Re: KG 200 Pilot’s
Hi All,
From a google search for the old LEMB site before the 'crash', a thread on a crashed P-47 with luftwaffe markings, I originally posted the mentioned photo via the board, and will try to find the original copy i was e mailled, sadly i lost the source of the photo in a 'computer crash' But here is a link to the cached thread, sadly no photos, but there is the discussion as to the possible identity of the P-47. Re: KG 200 Pilot’s
"41-6328/4th Fighter Group loss Hello all,
As an aside on the subject. The Germans are known to have in the early war years, repaint downed German a/c with Allied markings when transporting them across parts of germany. This was for the people's moral. Is it not a possibility that the Germans did the same thing in reverse in the late stages of the war to demoralize the advancing allied troops by painting downed allied a/c in German markings.Any thoughts on this . Alex." This is a quote from the above mentioned discuission! Does anyone know how Alex came up with this idea? It would invite both Flak and german fighters to shoot them down without "asking first"!! Sadly such hear say keeps coming up again and again. Until now any no solid evidence to support this has come to light. Junker |
Re: KG 200 Pilot’s
The only "foreign" fighter with german markings ever used operationally was the Macchi C. 205 of II./JG 77 (September-December 1943). Everything else is crap...
A very recommendable (and very old) book about captured allied a/c is Werner Lerche´s "Testpilot auf Beuteflugzeugen", but it is very hard to get, and I don´t know if there was an English edition... Regards, Heuser |
Re: KG 200 Pilot’s
Hi
Werner Lerche´s book is available in english and not so hard to find. Interesting, although very good, it only seems to relate to his experiences , what he flew and what he heard was captured. For example, his book mentions nothing about captured hurricanes, the captured hampden, but plenty of evidence is around, it is however a good starting point in researching captured a/c, I finish in saying it is an excellent book, and I recommend it to all.
