Lt Franz Weiss JG5

Hello

Looking for information on that "guy"

According to Werner Girbing in "Jagdgeschwader 5 Eismeerjager" (which dates from 1976),an Lt Franz Weiss is credited of 31 "abschuss"???.
No trace of him! in "luftwaffe officer career": real and part of the mysteries surrounding the JG5,or simple error?

Thanks in advance

michel

I've found only this, but I don't think it's the right Franz Weiss: WEISS, Franz. (DOB: 17.11.93). (n.d.) Fl.St.Ing.

I have Eric Mombeek's books on JG 5 to hand at the moment and there is no mention of a Franz Weiss at all!!!

Kracker has this....but there is no Franz Weiss as an Ehrenpokal or Deutsches Kreuz holder so god knows where that came from!!!

Magnus report?

Hi

It confirms my first impression that the information of Girbing is "doubtful".
I also saw Kracker but I tend to have reservations about their information as in this case.

On an other subject Ian,I have only the first 3 volumes of Mombeek's books, and from Monbeek on the 12/1/45 the 9 and 12/JG5 claimed 12 "abschuss" (Lancasters) ??

Maybe he's a character in a novel about Luftwaffe...?

Re: Lt Franz Weiss JG5

On 12 January 1945, RAF attacked Bergen in Norway, losing 3 or 4 Avro Lancasters (Mombeek says 4, the book Westküste by Halvor Sperrbund says 3) from IX and 617 Squadrons. Claims by Werner Gayko, Heinz Orlowski and Fw Georg Lieber are known.

There seems to be a Franz Weiss in JG 26
https://books.google.no/books?id=fuy...g%2026&f=false

As of 12/1-45:
PD 233 Shot down by Uffz. Ludwig Kirchner and Feldw. Georg Lieber over Austrheim, Lille landøy.

NG257 Shot down by Werner Gayko, reported as "brennenmd absturz" 93 km SW of Bergen. Known pos and an engine recovered.

NF 992 Crashed at sea outside Fedje after midair collision with Ludwig Kirchner.

Flak claimed 11, but all BS.

Which was in prison at that time, could it be that's reason why he is harder to trace?

Re: Lt Franz Weiss JG5

Thank you very much for your help (especially for the 12/01/45)

Indeed there has been a Franz Weiss in the JG26,an Uffz shot down and wounded on 22/2/45 by Tempest, but given his rank,I don't think he has anything in commun with "my" Franz Weiss of III/JG5.
It's hard to imagine that an "ace" with 31 victories, according to Girbing,is totally unknown : if only for one or two victories.

The book of Girbing is no longer current (1976 ):for example,no mention of the 5 Mosquitos shot down on 15/01/45;a difficult event not to cite (I am interested in any claims,I recorded the losses but not the opponents):9/JG5 ?

Re: Lt Franz Weiss JG5

15 January 1945: Oblt Hans Schneider of 13/JG 5 is credited with a Mosquito by Erich Mombeek, the other claimants are apparently not known.
