Air Battles over the Baltic 1941: The Air War on 22 June 1941 - The Battle for Stalin's Baltic Region
Looks like Helion will publish a new book about the air war on East Front: "Air Battles over the Baltic 1941: The Air War on 22 June 1941 - The Battle for Stalin's Baltic Region" by Mikhail Timin in this November (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...A3P5ROKL5A1OLE), as much as a fan of WWII air war like me, I am rather disappoint that Helion announced some other new books about WWII East Front air war, "A Storm on a Sunny Day. The Soviet 11th Composite Aviation Division and the Luftwaffe, 22 June 1941" by Dmitry Kienko is a good example, but somehow, the release date passed and we never heard this book ever since, I wish same would not happen this time

Wondering if this is original text or a translation of his previous Russian text articles. 528 pages is a lot of material and it seems that a lot of pictures, aircraft profiles and bio's will be fillers. Mikhail Timin is one of the best authors on Eastern Front air war that I have read.

Interesting, vast majority of books published by Helion have very high degree of quality, but that company had an unpleseant habit of skipping the promised publish date, I really wish this time Helion would make an exception

Re: Air Battles over the Baltic 1941: The Air War on 22 June 1941 - The Battle for Stalin's Baltic Region
This title hase been planned to edit in Russia for a few years (2 or 3). I think the text could be more improved, then his long three articles, which was cut by the editor due to the limit spaces in magazines (bombers, ground attacks and fighter regiments).
This will be very deep researach, even too deep for many readers, due to the lot of detailed data, such a new "biblia". He is indeed very good in this (Tymin). Most texts done based on archival data and cross-checked with German information/books ect. regards, mw PS I co-operate with Tymin during writing my book about 22.06.41 a few yeras ago, printed in Poland. |

That would be a shame

The second volume of my book, 'Magyar Warriors', has also been delayed several times by Helion. Luckily, however, it's now out since last Friday. I will post an update in the appropriate topic.

quote from First page....:
".....Unfortunately, the lack of historiography has enabled some opportunistic authors in recent years to publish several works of pseudo-research,in which disreputable attempts have been made to misrepresent the achievements of ... ....." I am wondering if he has Anyone particular on his mind. Did he decide to pull punches(not to call out someone's name) after he made such statement ? |
Re: Air Battles over the Baltic 1941: The Air War on 22 June 1941 - The Battle for Stalin's Baltic Region
For sure he has somebody, or more people, in his mind, as he mentions "authors" and "several works". How does the sentence end? Is he referring to the misrepresentation of the Soviet, or the German side of the story?

I see. Then it can be either Russian, or foreign authors. I can ask him directly.

Re: Air Battles over the Baltic 1941: The Air War on 22 June 1941 - The Battle for Stalin's Baltic Region
Just about every book written by Western authors since the end of the war have used German resources, both primary and secondary, when writing about the air war during the first few weeks of Barbarossa. Mikhail Timin disputes and condemns most or all of the German accounts in his writings of this period, so perhaps these are the books and authors he is talking about.

Re: Air Battles over the Baltic 1941: The Air War on 22 June 1941 - The Battle for Stalin's Baltic Region
..my copy arrived - very impressed (although I'm usually quite easy to please and have limited knowledge on Russia/Red Army historiography). Page count is 400 (exactly), not the 528 indicated in various places, with the events of 22 Jun 1941 kicking off on page 209, with an account from Trautloft. Translation is just a tad clunky and long-winded; "headquarters section " tactical number yellow 11", "insignia denoting his victories" etc etc. No German terminology used anywhere, aside from rank. It's all 'squadrons' 'wings' 'headquarters officer' etc etc Lots of profile artworks and excellent they are too - if a little small. Around 300 photos

Re: Air Battles over the Baltic 1941: The Air War on 22 June 1941 - The Battle for Stalin's Baltic Region
Thanks for the helpful review. It's a shame that translators, editors and publishers eradicate foreign language titles, job positions, etc., and replace these with English translations in those cases where the book is being directed at an English-speaking readership. Some of the authenticity and flavor or the work is lost when they do this, especially when it would be so easy to compile and add a glossary to the book. While it is true that many of us can easily reverse the English terms back into German, it is probably also true that a much smaller number can do this from English back into Russian. Hence, the justification for a glossary.

Re: Air Battles over the Baltic 1941: The Air War on 22 June 1941 - The Battle for Stalin's Baltic Region
Neil, are you sure about the page count? Occcasionally photo sections are not paginated along main text pages. E.g. original JJF edition of Hubert Meyer's 12. SS gave an impression of lesser pages due to this.

Re: Air Battles over the Baltic 1941: The Air War on 22 June 1941 - The Battle for Stalin's Baltic Region
well spotted Jukka, the profile artwork/maps section is paginated separately. The photo sections are incorporated into the main pagination. I make that 48 additional pages then, sorry for the misleading impression! There are additionally a few pages -situation and airfield maps - in the original Russian and the page reproductions from Signal magazine are from the French edition! Lovely thick glossy paper stock too by the way.
