Lockheed P-38 Lightning - successful over five continents
Good morning Gentlemen,
I'm trying to find out which planes scored kill on all five continents. The P-40 for sure. http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showth...t=45847&page=2 The P-39 and the F4U maybe. Also the P-38:

Hello,
Details can be found by searching the link of WW2Credits in the link given in the "Stickies" above. A quick Alphabetical search of it gave me the following, I omitted the dates. BONG, Richard I. Australia/Philippines, given in the Alphabetical List as SWP Fourth (40) claims, 21 with the 9th Fighter Squadron 19 with the 5th Fighter Squadron. KIENHOLZ, Donald D. Europe , given in the list as the MTO. Six(6) claims with the 94thFighter Squadron. MOORE, Frederick. Alaska Three(3) claims with the 54 Fighter Squadron. SLOAN, William J. Africa given in the Alphabetical l ist as MTO Twelve(12) claimed with the 96 Fighter Squadron. Alex |

were George Laven's Alaska kills scored in the P-38 (and over Alaska) ? Were Arthur Rice's Alaska kills scored in the P-39 or P-40 (and over Alaska) ? Cheers, Michael |

None of the 11th Air Force's victories were scored over "Alaska". All were scored over the Aleutian Islands, which are part of the (then territory, now state) of Alaska.
Laven's victories were scored in the P-38E. He actually has three in the Aleutians: a biplane over Kiska on September 14, 1942; and two Zeros on Feb 13, 1943, also over Kiska. However the credits given by the USAF are for half a victory on Oct 3, 1942 (this is actually a Mavis that was caught on the water in harbor and strafed, and thus should not be counted); 1.5 victories on Feb 13, 1943 (and I don't know how they arrived at the half credit). All these in the Aleutians with the 54th FS. He has an additional credit with the 49th FG on April 26, 1945 off Formosa, of an Emily. I have a problem with the latter, because when he sent me copies of his Form 5s it showed a silhouette of a Pete, which is rather different and smaller than an Emily. In particular, he is not an ace. Rice's claims were made while flying a P-39D. Enjoy! Frank. |

Alex's list indicates only one kill for Laven in February 1943 (plus a half-share on 3Oct42 and one on 26Apr45). It seems to me like the P-39 scored on at least four continents:

Calling the Phillipines part of Asia rather than Oceania seems special pleading.
The P-38 however did score kills in Burma and (I believe) in China. |

The P-38 scored 157 CBI kills.
The top P-38 ace in the CBI was Walter Duke, 10 kills. Can you tell me the locations of Richard Bong's kills 26-31 ? |

They are in my book, Stars and Bars, as are the claims for all other American aces after WW1. You should get a copy, from the used book market, since it is long out of print, but readily available. Enjoy! Frank. |

I found one copy of Amazon.de, about 10 on Amazon.com, and about 11 on ABEBooks. Probably a lot of overlap between Amazon.com and ABEBooks. Two of the dealers on ABEBooks are in the UK, which would reduce the postage from that for a US book dealer. I don't remember the price comparison between the UK and German dealers. The book is 668 pages, not the 696 that seems to be what everyone reports. Published in 1995 at $69.95, and 45 pounds. Out of print for probably 20 years. Some updates to it are in the back of Aces High, Volume 2. Enjoy! Frank. |

...STARS AND BARS reveals that William Sloan scored 5 kills over Africa and 7 kills over Europe. Does anybody know a P-38 ace with a higher score over the continent of Africa ?
