Re: JG1 on 27 December 1944
Bonjour,
René and ClinA-78 :thank you for your assistance. 15 losses !? That was a very important air battle. Studying the story of JG 103 and JG 105 in France (above all in Châteauroux) 1943-1944, I focus on the front line life of the pilots who trained there. For the 27 December 1944 air battle : I would like to know who was the victims of LT Elmer N. Fiery (364th FG) who claimed 2 Fw 190 destroyed and one damaged in Frankfurt area, the air combat starting at 5000. …. probably Uffz. Uffz. Helmuth Riehl ? and … ? Any information would be greatly appreciated ! Phil. |

Re: JG1 on 27 December 1944
Michel,
I just tried to research a good English word for the translation of the French expression « bouche bée » … « mouth agape » ? « beyond words » ? Whatever ! Your assistance is very precious, very important for me. I understand that – it is common – such air battle – is very difficult to. To compare carefully each victory and loss reports. Situation changed so fast … Michel, Each of your information is a very good track ! So I have to know more also on Allied side. How can I acknowledge you ! I do appreciate such icons which are symbolics of the difficulty of this study ! So Bocholt ? … Thank you very much indeed ! Phil. |
Re: JG1 on 27 December 1944
Beware with the matching claim vs loss, as such as the rough location given (ex : Dinant), always with a grain of salt.
Bocholt most probably in Germany. Best regards ClinA-78 |

Re: JG1 on 27 December 1944
Hello,
this battle was fought over the Motor Racing Aera Nürburgring, for both sides an well known landmark in the Eifel. Most of the 190 crashed in that aera. Ltn. Eduards Millers (he was one of the few none german pilots!) was wounded and used his parachute. He spent the rest for the war in an hospital. In the 1970's he lived in Venezuela. Most of the fallen Flugzeugführer rest at Adenau War Cemetary. I'm for sure that no of the JG 1 ever reach the Dinant aera!! h. |
Re: JG1 on 27 December 1944
Thank you for your additional information. So Dinant seems to be out as location. We have to study carefully that day : giving with 2 columns/entries like a face-to-face : losses / victories.
Please, do we know altutide and hour of the fall of Uffz Helmuth Riehl ? Thanks for all. Philippe |
Re: JG1 on 27 December 1944
Helo,
there is an Loss-List from the Fliegerhorstkommandantur Niedermendig. They handle four of the cases: Fw. Oswald Wolf, crashed 100m W of Tribüne Nürburgring Race Center OLtn. Walter Porsch, Ltn. Gottfried Just and Fw. Heribert Mehl crashed very close together in the "Bränke Kopf" District. Niedrmendig know the personal details of of Flugzeugführer, but give order to the burrial as unknown Airmen! Very strange. There fate was cleared in 1997 and the WASt conformed their names. h. |
Re: JG1 on 27 December 1944
Correction:
Not a prisoner of war, but instead Unteroffizier Adolf Schiller was killed and rests at Adenau military cemetery; grave Grab 59 Kind regards, Timon |
Re: JG1 on 27 December 1944
Are we sure the grave of Lt. Gottfried Just was identified? Would like to see confirmation and that Niedermendig report. I have a couple of nice pictures of him during his tome with 2./JG 1 late 1944.
