Fw. Werner Martin, Stab IV.(Sturm)/JG 3

Hi,

I would like more information on the career of Fw. Werner Martin, that served in Stab IV.(Sturm)/JG 3, MIA in 15-Mar-45.

How many abschuss did him obtain?

Is it possible that Martin flew the Dora 9 "Blue 2" based on Prenzlau?

Thank's a lot!

Re: Fw. Werner Martin, Stab IV.(Sturm)/JG 3

We find in the list of "Abschuss" of stab IV/JG3:

23/12/1944
Fw.RUDOLF Martin=Two B-26 (1.-2.)

24/12/1944
Fw.WERNER Martin=One B-17 (3.)

Obviously, there is a confusion of first name!(two Martin at the same time in Stab, difficult to believe!)

So Rudolf for Werner or Werner for Rudolf....Mystery!

Idem for 15/03/1945:Rudolf or Werner MIA (Fw.190 D-9 Wnr. 211 147)

Hi Guys

I have all three claims with Werner. He was born on 18th December 1919. Don't know the crash-sites but claims were exactly:-

23rd December 1944 B-26 1140 hrs 3500 metres Nr.1
23rd December 1944 B-26 1141 hrs 2000 metres Nr.2
24th December 1944 B-17 1231 hrs 6300 metres Nr.3

Missing in combat with Sowiet aircraft near Stettin, Germany on 15th March 1945. All three claims are recorded on the Mikrofilms, but these would be exactly when they cease, so possibly more claims later.

Kind Regards

Johannes

Hello Johannes,

This incident has been covered repeatedly from the American side, so I easily found a few links, which might be worth looking at before Faenor has time to respond. Two of the links are old threads on this forum. To summarise, 34 Marauders were lost:

Dan

According to Losses of the 8th and 9th Air Forces Vol 5, 40 Marauders were lost and eight more salvaged upon return.
I have not gone through each of these 48 losses to determine if they were caused by fighters/flak or if some were due to 'simple' technical reasons.

To me it suffice to say it must have been a horrible day. One of the worst in USAAF (USAF) history no doubt.

Hello Stig,

Thank you for providing data from the best research work on the subject. 48 lost bombers is a large number, but the Germans suffered very heavy losses on this day too, 135 according to the ww2aircraft.net thread linked to above. In that context, this was a very successful day for the USAAF, especially since many ground targets were attacked and the aerial resupply of Bastogne began on this day. This was the day when Allied air power put an end to all German hopes of further success in the Ardennes.

Regards,

Dan
