Günther Bertram

Good morning Gentlemen,

how many of Günther Bertram's kills were scored in the He 111 ?

Michael

Re: Günther Bertram

Legitimate victories or overclaims?
I believe I have at least one, possibly two of the former listed.
His first 13 victories are listed as having occurred during a tenure with NJS LF 6, the remainder with 4., then 1./NJG 100 if that is of significance

Re: Günther Bertram

I've had an extensive correspondence with Bertram during the research of the NCA series, and will present all of his victory claims, matching Russian losses, plus a series of unique photos of the converted He11 night fighters and Bertram's wartime memoirs in a later volume in the NCA series.

Cheers, Theo

Re: Günther Bertram

Good afternoon Theo,

great.
Can you tell me the how many He 111 kills he has ?

Michael

Re: Günther Bertram

A total of 14 Abschüsse, three of which were downed by his BF but were counted towards Bertram's total.

Re: Günther Bertram

Hello Theo,

thanks for your answer.
That renders Günther Bertram the joint top ace of the He 111 together with Waldemar Teige who scored all of his 14 kills in the He 111, right ?

Cheers,

Michael

Re: Günther Bertram

Good evening,

night fighter ace Günther Bertram's total is sometimes given as 35 and sometimes as 29.
May it be that the former sources erroneously include the six kills of the JG54 of the same name ?

Cheers,

Michael

Re: Günther Bertram

It doesnt render Bertram the top ace if three victories actually were made by his Bordfunker, I guess.

Re: Günther Bertram

Personally, I wouldn't mind noting down these kills im my Bertram file.

His He 111 kills are the ones scored in 1943, aren't they ?
However, I only found 13 not 14:
15,3.43
19,3.43
10,4.43
11,4.43
11,4.43
14,4.43
3,5.43
3,5.43
9,5.43
20,6.43
24,6.43
24,6.43
20,7.43

Re: Günther Bertram

Hi Guys

Of Bertram's claims only twelve appear on the daily mikrofilms, however his BF Schewe's flugbuch accounts for four more past the day when the daily mikrofilms stop, and one other(26th February 1944) which is missing from the mikrofilms, however on the mikrofilms for 4./NJG100 showing just date and time there is an unaccounted claim on this date at 1922 hrs....Bertrams, giving a total of thirty confirmed claims(including those by his BF).

Question for Theo

AS we have only thirteen not fourteen claims for him with NJS LF 6 which one are we missing please, and which three were by his BF, and what was his BF's name.

Also out of curiosity, as all the claims are bombers, what was the BF's position/location?

Also when did Bertram die?

Keep well

Johannes

Re: Günther Bertram

Hi guys,

I share the interest of Johannes in Günther Bertram.
Unfortunately, his family name is also a given name, which makes it difficult to read up on him.
He was born in 1920 like the mathematician of the same name, but on a different date.

Cheers,

Michael

From his accounts I'd have thought a few of his claims would be U2 and R5 biplanes supplying partisan groups located behind the front lines - one of the reasons for using the slow He 111 (and Fw 189).

Re: Günther Bertram

Good evening FalkeEins,

in my Günther Bertram claim list I find only two R-5's and no U-2's.
However, this list might lack one claim in the He 111.

Cheers,

Michael

Re: Günther Bertram

Hello Michael

..thanks. Going back to your post #7 Bertram himself wrote; " my last and 35th victory ...."

knusel 7th May 2022 14:50

Re: Günther Bertram

Good afternoon FalkeEins,

yes that excludes this conjecture. Thank you.
Did he mean his Lancaster kill on 10/11Apr1945 when he wrote that ?

Have a good weekend,

Michael

knusel 10th September 2023 10:20

Re: Günther Bertram

...the research of Johannes Matthews and Theo Boiten has revealed two more:
29,6.43 R-5
26,2,44 DB-3
Still only three missing.
Is Günther Bertram still alive?

Re: Günther Bertram

I find Bertram's given name sometimes spelled a "Günther" and sometimes as "Günter". which is correct ?
