Identity Do17 Z unit coded U5+ June 1940?
 

Dear all,

Who can tell me which KG (?) unit operated with the Dornier Do17 Z coded U5+ from Griesheim, Lachen-Speyer and Niedermendig in June 1940?

U5=KG 2 but the bases May June 40 were Geinsheim & Wengerohr (I Gruppe), Gross Ostheim, Ober Olm & Trier (II Gruppe) & Biblis & Kirchberg (III Gruppe)

That unit was the Nachtjagdkette 1, formed early June with Do 17Z from 2./KG 2.
The unit became 5./NJG 1 on 19.07.40.

This would explain why Uffz Vincenz Giessübel of 2./KG 2 POW 15 May 1940 ends up on 2./NJG 2 but before you ask, his logbook starts 13 Nov 40! However, he returned to his unit 18 May 1940, EK 1 21 May 1940 then posted to 5./NJG 1 15 Aug 40 and this becomes 2./NJG 2 11 Nov 40. No mention of Nachtjagdkette

Right Chris -it would be great to know if there are any photos around of Nachtjagdkette 1 Do17 Z's!

I know of at last one Do17 Z that flew with 5./NJG1 on a Fernnachtjagd op from Schiphol airfield in mid August 1940 still bearing the old U5+ code, but alas no photo ..

Hi,

I have a logbook of this section: first night fighter patrol had been flown on 7.6.40 between 00.00 and 02.47 hrs from Griesheim (on an altitude of 7000 m in the area of Mannheim-Darmstadt) in Do 17Z U5+BK.

Hi Robert -yes that's the FB that I'm referring to. And Chris; I don't know the version Z that the NJ Kette 1 flew, just the type Z given in FB.

Dear all,

I've an additional question to this topic: in an early-war Nachtjagd Flugbuch I've come across the entry of a Do17 Z 2N+HH belonging to 5./NJG1 (early July 1940). What was the previous unit code of 2N+? (One would have expected the a/c to be coded G9+ by early July 1940).
