Black Cross Red Star Vol. 3 - publication news
I receive quite a lot of e-mail from people asking me when Black Cross/Red Star Vol. 3 will be published. I too started to wonder when I saw on Eagle Edition's website that the publication is postponed to August this year, so I phoned Judy Crandall (the publisher). Judy explained that the reason to this delay is that when she received the colour proofs from the printer, she was not satisfied and returned them to the printer and asked them to rework it.
Now that might be Eagle Editions in a nutshell: Maybe not always fast, but indeed very careful about quality! I think we can all expect a book of the highest printing quality from Eagle Editions when Black Cross/Red Star Vol. 3 is released. I was very impressed with what they did with the Graf & Grislawski book, but I can tell you that the printouts for Black Cross/Red Star Vol. 3 which they sent me really surpasses the G&G book in terms of layout etc. Hope people will like the contents too... |
Re: Black Cross Red Star Vol. 3 - publication news
I am sooooo hanging out for this book. I've lost count of the number of times I've re-read both Vol's 1 and 2. :)
As a 'series' study of the aerial campaign of a Theatre of war it is unique. Whatever you do Christer please, please don't get tied of writing on the subject! |
Re: Black Cross Red Star Vol. 3 - publication news
Hi Jim,
Don't worry - I won't get tired! Never with such supportive readers as you! :) Black Cross/Red Star Vol. 4 is more or less completed, and Eagle Editions has promised to publish that one already by the end of this year. Let's hold our thumbs that the printer will succeed the first time... Then I have a similar series for which I hae received contracts from Ian Allan in the UK: "Eastern Front Air War". Four volumes will be published: "Barbarossa: The Air War": Due mid 2007 "Stalingrad: The Air War": Due late 2007 "Kursk: The Air War": Due mid 2008 "Eastern Front 1944-45: The Final Air Battles": Due late 2008 Those books have more of a "strategic" angle, while the Black Cross/Red Star series are more operationally focused. |
Re: Black Cross Red Star Vol. 3 - publication news
Marvellous news Christer. The new series should prove to be a nice balance to the BC/RS series. May you forever be kept busy writing! :)

Sounds good! The BC/RS books are among the finest WWII books I have read.

Re: Black Cross Red Star Vol. 3 - publication news
Anything heard from the Crandalls re Vol 3? We should be getting close to publication all being well. I believe August was suggested as the new date.

Re: Black Cross Red Star Vol. 3 - publication news
Christer, the books "Luftstrid över Kanalen" and "Nattbombare" also look very interesting. Are they likely to be published in English?
Especially interested in an English version of Luftstrid över Kanalen. There are almost no books dealing with the Battle from the Luftwaffe side. It's almost always protrayed from teh British side, which is in many ways quite one-sided. |

Yes John, I have yours, and those of Chris Goss. Those aside (and two or three others) and that's about it.

Re: Black Cross Red Star Vol. 3 - publication news
Jim,
I'm not talking about mine & Chris's. Over the years Motorbuch Verlag has published loads of Luftwaffe stuff, particularly on individual units. |
Re: Black Cross Red Star Vol. 3 - publication news
Hello Christer!

May be your have an ideas to reprint vol.1 in new company. I think many peoples awaited. Let me informed abt this matter. Thanks in advance. Igor. |

Re: Black Cross Red Star Vol. 3 - publication news
To everyone asking about news on my books, please visit my website for any updates:
http://www.bergstrombooks.elknet.pl/ One month ago (30 June) was the deadline for the delivery of the manuscript of my book "Luftstrid över Kanalen/Battle of Britain" to the Swedish and international military publisher Leandoer & Ekholm. Yesterday I delivered the manuscript of my book "Barbarossa: The Air War" to the publisher Ian Allan (deadline was today). It will be published by Ian Allan in the spring of 2007. Yesterday I also received news from my "Black Cross/Red Star" publisher (Eagle Editions) that "Black Cross/Red Star", Vol. 3 "has been printed, should be bound this next week and made ready for shipment to us". Previously, I have delivered the manuscripts of two separate pilot biographies on two JG 54 "Grünherz" pilots to another publisher, and that publisher now tells me that those two books are intended to be published before Christmas 2006. (I have contracts for both books.) Right now, I am working on the book "Stalingrad: The Air War", which will be published by Ian Allan in the autumn of 2007. Info from my website: * Luftstrid över Kanalen: A re-edited new edition of Christer Bergström's book on the Battle of Britain, "Luftstrid över Kanalen". This book is based on an extensive research into British and German archives, and interviews with a large number of pilot veterans from the Battle of Britain. It will contain a complete list of each individual aircraft loss and each individual victory claim on both sides throughout the Battle of Britain. This is a 200,000-word book (i.e. twice that of Black Cross/Red Star) and contains nearly 400 photographs, many of which are from pilot veterans' personal albums and have never been published before. Will be published in September 2006. Click here to go to the publisher's advertisement. * Battle of Britain: The English edition of the above book. Scheduled to be published in December 2006. Click here to go to the publisher's advertisement. The British publisher Ian Allan will publish four books by Christer Bergström on the history on the air war on the Eastern Front: * Barbarossa: The Air War: To be published in the spring of 2007. (Update 31 July 2006: I just delivered the manuscript to the publisher - my deadline for delivery was 1 August 2006.) * Stalingrad: The Air War: To be published in the autumn of 2007. * Kursk: The Air War: To be published in the spring of 2008. * Storm over the Eastern Front: The Air War 1944 - 1945: To be published in the autumn of 2008. These books will study the air war on the Eastern Front from a slightly different angle than Black Cross/Red Star. The "Ian Allan books" will be more oriented toward planning and strategy, while the Black Cross/Red Star books are more of operational histories. As you all can see, I am in the midst of a quite hectic writing period. :) BTW, Shikhov, "Barbarossa: The Air War" is a 100,000-word book which could be regarded as a second (but very much edited) edition of "Black Cross/Red Star: Vol. 1". |
Re: Black Cross Red Star Vol. 3 - publication news
Thanks for clearing up that point on the English version of 'Luftstrid över Kanalen' Christer. The publishers site doesn't actually say anything about the English version. At least not that I can see. I'll be watching the publishers site like a hawk! :)
I've already have my order in for Vol.3 of BC/RS, so I'm just waiting patiently for that. By the time I've finished reading those I'll be ready for your next four books. :) |

I think that in this book you will find much which isn't in other books on the same topic. Yes, I mean both "new" facts and new conclusions. I am happy that my publisher allowed me as much as 200,000 words for that, because I needed it. (A "normal" BC/RS book is 100,000 words.) |
Re: Black Cross Red Star Vol. 3 - publication news
Hello Christer!
just a quick question: amazon.de lists Vol.3 of BC/RS as available from 1st December-this cannot be true I sincerely hope!!! do you know when the printed copies go into the retail process finally? I am greatly looking forward to Vol.3 becoming available, so any news would be good news! cheers phil |

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/097...e=UTF8&s=books That's still a hefty price... |
Re: Black Cross Red Star Vol. 3 - publication news
amazon.com shipping within the USA = (68,95 US Dollar ) = ~ 57,50 €
amazon. de (germany) = 99, 90 € amazon.Germany = Abzocker  |
Re: Black Cross Red Star Vol. 3 - publication news
well, I ordered my copy of "Graf & Grislawski" from the US section of amazon.com and saved me about 30 Euros in doing so, compared to ordering it from amazon.de or from a European based abebooks seller;
Once it is out, I guess I will order BC/RS 3 from the USA as well, amazon.com has a fast, reliable service to Europe and it does cost less than ordering from Europe; |
Re: Black Cross Red Star Vol. 3 - publication news
Thanks for the tip, Griffon.
Because i can not ignore Christers BC & RS, part 3 . That´s for sure. i own part 1 and 2 already. |
Re: Black Cross Red Star Vol. 3 - publication news
Boandl, its always a good idea to check amazon marketplace or abebooks or amazon.com before ordering expensive books :)
for example, the JG-300 chronicle retails for over 100euros here in Vienna; I ordered it from the USA and saved me 20 Euros in the process; I have not ordered anything from amazon.de in a loong time now, they are really abzocker :D |
Re: Black Cross Red Star Vol. 3 - publication news
Boandl,
check this link: http://www.lob.de/cgi-bin/work/frame...=44e866d8a5d60 When you type "Christer Bergstrom" for the author, you get the book as number 1 in the search list for 68.95 Dollars. It is a German bookstore with free shipping even from foreign countries. That should save a lot of bucks :D Kind regards Robert |
Re: Black Cross Red Star Vol. 3 - publication news

I've seen aggressive marketing of History Books, but this goes a bit far!!
http://eagle-editions.com/IMG_0437.gif http://eagle-editions.com/BCRS.HTM Pre-ordered my copy more than a year ago, but seeing this I'd be tempted to order a couple more!! Is that Patty, Eagle Edition's "Office Manager"? :piliot: |

Re: Black Cross Red Star Vol. 3 - publication news
Hi All,
We just received our shipment of BCRS3 and I have to confess that, after flipping through the first opened box, I am our very first customer for it. What a beautiful volume (not to detract from the picture of Rachael above of course!). The profiles are the usual excellent job and the photo selection is very well done - a refreshing blend of 1st time (that I've seen) and limited previous exposure shots, all occuring in the right places relevant to the little text I have glanced over. I look forward to digging into a deeper reading of it through the weekend (and then some), but on the face of it, I cannot see where anybody will be disappointed with this awesome piece of work... a worthy addition to the BCRS tradition... a must for any Eastern Front or Luftwaffe oriented library... I could go on... and on. Christer, you and your team are to be heartily commended. Congratulations on another real winner. Terry @ Aviaeology www.aviaeology.com |

Re: Black Cross Red Star Vol. 3 - publication news
I am spending the whole weekend reading this book, and almost finished 80% of it, and the impression it gave me is great, the only problme, I may be a little greedy, is that when I was waiting for this book, for years actually, I kind of expect when it descript the great air battle over Stalingrad, it would be more like a day-by-day, blow-by-blow account, used both side accounts in detail, I may read too many books of Chirstopher shores, you guys shall know what I means, I do not mean Black Cross Red Star Vol. 3 was not good, but although christer did provide daily claims submitted by German fighters (those claimed by Luftwaffe bomber and flak units were not included), I usually could not find how many aircrafts actually lost by VVS, and according to Soviet records, how many of those were shot down by Luftwaffe fighters, how many down by German flak, and how many simply did not return from mission ? for example "When 18 September was over, more than one third of the II-2 in 228 ShAD and 291 ShAD had been either lost or put out of commision in a single day's fighting, The German fighters claimed 77 victories for a single loss." "In total Fliegerkorps VIII's German fighter pilots claimed 25 Soviet aicraft shot down against only four of their own combat losses on September 16. Meanwhile, Romanian airmen reported another four victories", "30 Soviet aicraft reportedly shot down by Fliegerkorps VIII that day, Romanian airmen contributed with three" etc. etc.
Christer did provide the VVS loss data in some time period, for example "16 VA, with an average of less than 100 operational aircrafts, 1ost 111 aircraft between 4 September to 11 September. To Those figures should be add at least as many aicraft lost by 8 VA and 102 IAD PVO", but not a day-by-day loss data. the comparision of VVS claimes and actually Luftwaffe losses were more available, but still was not for everyday, I understand that this book was not title with "air battle over Stalingrad", so that could not be go to too detail, and it was possible some of those VVS war time doucment still not available to public, but I still wish it could be a little more, like Christopher shore, a two way street, first claim from one side, then from other side's account, how many aircraft really lost, and if possiblem what were the causes ? I wish Christer would not say I am too pigy, because overall, it was an excellent and highly recommand book. |
Re: Black Cross Red Star Vol. 3 - publication news
