Fw 190s from Alfred Price
Still sorting through his 1000s of photos-anyone seen these before? There are hundreds of Fw 190 photos and most are not annotated on the back

I had no idea he had died, how did I miss that, love his books.
Btw Chris, in case you don't know Richard Wittmann passed away last year. I remember exchanging e mails about him re your Fighter bombers over Britain book a few years ago. |

Re: Fw 190s from Alfred Price
Hi Chris,
For what it's worth, there appears to be a different photo of your second Fw 190 on p. 48 in Vol. 2 of Dora Kurfurst und Rote 13/Karl Ries (1964) which is wrongly captioned: Eine Kette FW 190 A-1 auf ihrem Liegeplatz im besetzten Frankreich. Beim vorderen Flugzeug (gelbe7) wird gerade der Motor abgebremst. The black lightning motif seen behind the engine exhaust appears to be an incomplete rendition of "der stilisierte Adler" seen on the Fw 190 As of III./JG2 on p. 64 of Vol. 1 of the same series. best regards, Jim |
Re: Fw 190s from Alfred Price
Why was the first photo (190 in flight) extensively retouched? Look closely, it's been seriously altered.

Re: Fw 190s from Alfred Price
I would agree on the retouching but how does that compare to the copy in the 1966 boo?. No photoshop then!

Re: Fw 190s from Alfred Price
Hi Chris,
I would value the Colonel's opinion on this. To my eye, your photo seems to be a different copy from the same negative. Some observations: 1. Ries' photo p. 49 is cropped. Only the aircraft is visible so I cannot compare the lower background. 2. The ever so slightly lighter tone of greys in Ries' picture eliminate all clouds and give a solid looking sky as well as all but eliminating the third propeller blade. This suggests to me a different print. 3. The white dot in the "5" and all white negative imperfections are eliminated. 4. In your picture the outline of the aircraft and the demarcation lines between dark and light camo are more defined, suggesting a better quality photographic paper was used. Curiously, the visible propeller blades are better defined in Ries' photo. best regards, Jim |

Attached is a digital photograph of a photograph that may simply be an over-enlargement of a small portion of a negative resulting in an image that is grainy and blurry. Jim |

The tail wheel is depicted as being retracted, but it's retracted in the wrong location. And the drop tank attachment is wonky and wrong too. This photo appears to be a heavily doctored image. Bronc |
