Re: 349 Sqn Jun 1944

I've been searching in vain for years to find the full names of many Belgian fighter pilots. I have a list of Belgian RAF pilots that shows given names, as well as date of birth, only for those with the last names beginning in A to G. Also those who were killed during the war are found in the CWGC website. The only one of these on your list is:

Sans, Marcel Adrien (rather than "M.J.") (138840) KIA 7 June 1944

https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/c...marcel-adrien/

"Braggard, J." is Bragard, Jean Henri Fernand (1424828)

The service number for J. G. Moureau is 1289855

Apparently it is J.C.I. Van Molkot (rather than" Melkot") (serv. no. 1814824)

Tom

Chris,

Perhaps this website helps: http://www.theairforcechapel.be/the-role-of-honour.html

Scroll down to "349".

Re: 349 Sqn Jun 1944

ClinA-78,

Unfortunately, I don't have that history of 349 Sqn. Would you be so kind as to provide the full names of the following:

Henry F. Bailly (158234)
M. M. Siraut (138885)
A. Uydens (153168)
Albert A. van de Velde (123067)

Also there was a British NCO flying with 349, F/Sgt. D. Blair. Do you have his full name and/or service number?

Thanks.
Tom

Re: 349 Sqn Jun 1944

This has been quite useful, but might I add a few requests?

Service numbers:
Van Molkot
Bragard
Moureau

Full name:
Paul Albert Jules D Siroux

Full name and service numbers:
J Moreau (not Moureau)
D Clarke
Denis A Smerdon

And I seek clarification on one name:
Jean Ester, 127452. I have him as claiming a damaged Bf 109 on July 26, 1944 as a F/O. But I also have him with 350 Sqn as a Sgt, making claims in 1942, but POW on August 16, 1942. Did the 350 Sqn Ester escape and go to 349 Sqn? Or do we have two different (Jean) Ester pilots?

Enjoy!

Frank.

Re: 349 Sqn Jun 1944

Frank,

Check out my previous post regarding the service numbers for Bragard, Moureau and Van Molkot.

Moreau de Melen, Jean Fernand René Gérard (138884)

http://surfcity.kund.dalnet.se/belgium_moreau.htm

Smerdon, Denis Anthony (1478913) per AIR 78

Clarke, Douglas Forrester, DFC, CdG Belge (AFC post war) (NZ417018)

http://www.aucklandmuseum.com/war-me...otaph%2Fsearch

Also from Johnnie Houlton's book Spitfire Strikes (page 192):

"It was about this time that 349 (Belgian) Squadron was short of experienced sub-section leaders, and Doug Clark (sic) was seconded from 485 Squadron to fly with the Belgians. He had an enjoyable short tour, sharing the destruction of a FW 190; and the Belgian Command marked their appreciation of his efforts by awarding him the Belgian Croix de Guerre."

Tom

Re: 349 Sqn Jun 1944

Frank,

Also as for Jean Ester, he did in fact escape and returned to the UK on 30.04.43; later being posted to 349.

Re 349 Sqn 1944
My adoptive Father, Alfred 'Freddy' Moureau, was Squadron leader for 349 Belgian Squadron....he sadly passed away in 2012 (today would of been his 98th birthday).
His twin brother (who served alongside him in 349 Squadron), is Joseph Moureau.
I hope this helps & I will try to answer any further queries if I can although my knowledge is limited.
