Gruman Tracker, fate ?

Hello,
Looking through Scramble's US Military Aircraft Mishaps 1950-2004 .

I wondered just what happened with a Gruman Tracker that is listed -
16 May 1964 - 149883 - S-2E - NT - VS-38.
No other details of any event/accident or crash, fatal or otherwise.

Anyone know anything about this ?

Thanks
Alex

Re: Gruman Tracker, fate ?

149883 did not serve with VS38. I think you must mean 149884 which was lost on the date you give whilst with VS38 aboard Bennington.

Re: Gruman Tracker, fate ?

Thank you for the reply George.
I have checked the book and page 148
16 May 64
149883 - S-2E - NT - VS-38
58-2096 - T33A - HQ Command (nr) Shaw AFB, SC, USA, crew OK.

So perhaps a printers typo ?
Or Scramble has incorrect info ?

Alex

PS
Have sent you a pm.

Printer's typo most likely.

Thanks for checking George

PS: I can add, thanks to Mach III and Sid Nanson that the incident happened at sea while onboard USS Bennington

USS Bennington was enroute from Sasebo (JP) to Hong Kong (port visit) and Manla for most part of May 1964.

Leendert

(Find no reference to a typhoon in the South China Seas the carrier found itself in causing damage to aircraft onboard.)

I suggest we give Alex a crash course in diving and let him chase the wreck...:D:D

Actually, all that is needed is for someone with a little time on their hands to go to NARA II and pull the deck log for Bennington for May 1964 and copy the page(s) for May 16. Unfortunately with the new one-pull-at-a-time policy it would cost me two hours of copying documents for MAW, which is close to a box for what I am currently working on.

Enjoy!

Frank.

Re: Gruman Tracker, fate ?

Hello all,
So are we agreed that "Scramble" has it wrong and that it is a typo error. The a/c number should be -
Not 149883
But 149884.
Also to find out about both of the a/c further searching would be nessesary.
Thank you all for your input

Joe Baugher's site has -

149883 (MSN 158C) to Turkish Navy as TCB-883. WFU Jul 8, 1994.
But nothing for '884 .

Re: Gruman Tracker, fate ?

Hello all,
OK I found the a/c that I was seeking.
147643 delivered to Netherlands in May 1960 and returned to the US Navy in November 1974.
