Schmauz was not a pilot & I have not heard from his Granddaughter as to his health or wellbeing. I am fairly sure that Leykauf, Dinkel & Ille are no longer with us. Surely this post should be in the Luftwaffe section not Obituary?

Re: Luftwaffe pilots Alive ?

Our dear Sighart passed several years ago, as did Werner Molge, both representative fellows of our diminishing JG27/26 veterans association. Even now some of our widows are also of advanced age and missing from our reunions.
Manfred Leisebein also gone, translated for he and wife at a reunion years ago, first met after the reunification, with Victor Peterman, his friend. What stories I added to near 50 years worth.
Very decent fellows, sorely missed!
Best wishes for Christmas and New Years for all of you, especially health!

If he is still alive, Peter Spoden will turn 100 years of age this year...

Peter Spoden is still alive and in good spirits.

I spoke with him on the telephone last week, and he will indeed be 100 this coming November. One of the very last Nachtjager still with us!

Thank you for the info. I am happy he is still alive and in good spirits.
I find it remarkable he survived four cases of getting shot up and living up to such an age!

Very sad news...
I came across the following comment of Mr Spoden, from 2010. The last sentence is still very true, but he must have been one of the very last of warriors.

Of course, there are “sentimental attachments” to the aircraft you fly, like driving your old car. The same in airlines. I still remember the good old DC3 D-CADE I flew as a young Cpt. 55 years ago.

However as a fighter pilot, when the ship is on fire or imminent danger, you jump out right away, not asking much.

In the prop time ice, snow and fog at the ground were still dangerous.
Concerning my radio operator Kurt Schmiedler, he died early because of the many wounds he had received. With the other fellows I am loosing contact. The old warriors fade away slowly, on both sides.

Peter

...passed away some years ago. I think it was a son or daughter who wrote to me after his passing to say that my last letter to him was open on his desk when they were clearing it...
