German Intruders over UK 10th February 1941

Hi,

On return from Hanover on the night of February 10th 1941, a number of crews of 218 Squadron based at RAF Marham reported a solitary JU88 which circled Marham, it closed in on a Wellington but did not engage.

Can anyone confirm if NJG.2 were active on this date.

TIA

Steve

Yes-they were very active from 1948 hrs onwards and claimed 6 aircraft in the early hours of 11 Feb 41. One aircraft reported attacking a Wellington over Marham at 0210 hrs

Hi Steve,

Chris and Nick are right -I've published an elaborate account of the German intruder effort on 10-11.2.41 in the NCA Early Years part 1, including a plotting map of the night's actions. Hope of use.

Cheers, Theo

Carsten-you would get more infirmation from the German side or Simon Parry's book on Fernnachtjagd and of course Theo's books.

Thank you for the information, Chris. I have Simon and Theo's books, but I need more …..

I was looking for information in Freiburg in October, but did not find very much. I am going there again sometime during this winter after I have done a bit more research.

You can find operational information in the Lagebericht & Luftflotte 3 Einzelmeldung but it is a case of working through each day to see what is written. Crew details are not included. I am sure that Theo can suggest more sources but what exactly are you after over and above what has already been published?

I am after how many German intruders operated on certain nights plus what damage they did. Some of them carried 10 x 50 kg bombs. I will check Lageberichte Luftflotte 3.

Luftflotte 3 reports are incomplete as it appears they only covered missions in their AOR

Hi all,

I do hope you'll be able to find more on the Fernnachtjagd Carsten! This is what I've written in the NCA series on the sources that I've used in creating an analysis of the Fernnachtjagd effort in the NCA series:

In early 2018, a series of daily Lageberichte (Situation Reports) of the Oberbefehlshaber der Luftwaffe Führungsstab Ic (Supreme Commander of the Luftwaffe, Air Staff Intelligence Officer) for 1939-1941 kept in the Central Archives of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation (TsAMO) have been digitised. These, in combination with a series of Luftflotte 3 daily reports (BArch-MA file RL 7/99-104), which include detailed reports on the Fernnachtjagd effort for most of the nights in the period of late May to mid-October 1941, and with a detailed British analysis of the German intruder effort for the period of July-October 1941 (preserved in AIR 14/1897), enabled the author to make an almost complete reconstruction of the most successful period of the German intruder operations over Britain, April to October 1941.

Cheers, Theo

It might be worth trying the Ministry of Home Security, Home Security Daily Intelligence Reports for January–March 1941 in HO 203/6. These reports usually detail where bombs fell and what damage was inflicted.
