Caveat emptor

This photo is currently for sale on eBay
https://qm5rfa.am.files.1drv.com/y4m...&cropmode=none
by seller 1402black.

The same seller offered similar prints of this photo in the past using the names contra72 & lunalisa1. Buyer beware!

Re: Caveat emptor

And sold for a ridiculous 203,77 €. "Congratulations" to the buyer

Re: Caveat emptor

Thank you, Rudi, for pointing out this not so rare situation.
I also bid on this particular photo, of yourse not that insane amount of money.
Please, Rudi (and anyone else), if you will spot other similar incidents, inform us before the auction closes.
Thanks!

Hi Dénes,
I posted the initial warning Dec 30th. The auction ended Jan 3rd. So it was posted before the auction closed.

No doubt more prints of this photo will appear on eBay in the future, offered by the same seller but under a different eBay nickname. I will post them and similar ones from other sellers.

I wonder how many copies of this photo the seller has. I think this must be the 10th time he's selling this photo as "original"!

Re: Caveat emptor

A few observations. There are many buyers who are unaware of this site. And the photo is worth whatever someone is willing to pay. Buyers who do not know just do not know. If they have no idea then they just do what they want. So it is not ridiculous - to them.

Best,
Ed

And again:

https://www.ebay.de/itm/Flugzeug-Hei...n/353311051164

This time the description says it's an "Erinnerungsfoto" (Remenbrance photo). Makes a nice change from "Beleg Foto" or "photo from Russian archives".

For those who missed it: apparently Bethge/lehesten got caught with his pants down:

sold by seller 100yearsofhistory

https://i.ibb.co/thvGKsf/100yearsofhistorty.jpg

Bought by betghe/lehesten and (apparently after some modification) put up for sale again:

Giels appears to be a new and so far reliable seller but I have lost count how many times this photo has appeared on eBay from various sellers:

Unbelievable that anyone will pay over 400 Euros for this:

Re: Caveat emptor

Is it me or are many of the starting prices on eBay now way way above what they should be? Also, some sellers describe what they are selling as something they are clearly not in a hope to get the less knowledgeable to bid? For example a buy it now photo of the tail & rear fuselage of a Do 17 no date, unit or details so nothing special at all….buy it now for €129.98….€15 postage…..plus VAT outside EU!

Occasionally, sellers use "copy protection" that simply cancels the sample photo, no details can be discerned. Like this recent example:

Looks fake to me.

It definitely is. Empty period photo albums have a good selling value on eBay, for a purpose...

Re: Caveat emptor

I noticed a new trend lately, certain (few) eBay sellers offer reproduction photos at exorbitant prices, probably hoping that no one would think that a cheap repro would be offered at such a high price, so it *must* be an original photo. Starting price a mere EUR 379,99. Plus EUR 15,95 shipping price (to EU) on the top.
Here is one such example: https://www.ebay.de/itm/353720857855...K&LH_Auction=1

Re: Caveat emptor

This is becoming increasingly frequent especially with sellers setting ridiculously high prices. I have just paid $560 for 300 photos from Poland, BofF and BoB including postage and insurance-a far better price I believe

Incredible, indeed! Apparently, for some people, money is only something remote, only a number.

Maybe the 28 of October 1944 is the buyers' birthday :-p

Re: Caveat emptor

I've noticed and come to a few conclusions regarding German eBay. Some people can't read German, others are just unaware that certain photos have been offered multiple times, and still others see a certain photo, and for no apparent reason, decide it's worth a lot of money. Some time ago, a buyer named Sudek13 was just buying and buying. I took it as more than just collecting. Perhaps for a future book?

Chris Goss 23rd February 2022 08:13

Re: Caveat emptor

Sudek13 was a millionaire who was collecting photos for what is now the Archive of Modern Conflict. He also had a team bidding on his behalf and as a result prices rocketed.

Interesting photo of Paul Gildner’s Do 215B-5 sold on eBay but for $725….really!!!?? How can it really be worth that much to anyone? Seller must be booking his holiday to The Maldives as I write this
