Captured Dh Moth
Hello every body :)
I would like to know if one you know in wich book the picture below was published, or best, where i can find a Hd scan... It's, no surprise, a DH Leopard Moth captured by the Lutwaffe at Bordeaux Airfield late june 1940... I really like to find it because i am preparing an article about the french unit who fly this kind of british plane in may/june 1940. Anyway if you know/have picture of moth family (Leopard, Hornet, Tiger) in the same state (captured somewhere in France) it would be a great surprise :-) Big big thanks for your help... Re: Captured Dh Moth
:o i do not think so
GM+Os is most probably ex french one. This one is in unit. Planes in Bordeaux, like the Leopard below, only received cross on fuselage and wings. Anyway, big big thanks for your research :-) Matt |
Re: Captured Dh Moth
I have a DH89 Dragon Rapide in German service. Over the years i have seen a few of the moth family on my trawl on Ebay

Re: Captured Dh Moth
There also was the Belgian Leopard Moth OO-GEJ captured by the Geramans in 1940, but then at Montpellier...
Regards, Leendert |
Re: Captured Dh Moth
Hello Leendert
I have no info about the belgian Moth, but it seems very surprising that he was captured in Montpellier. Montpellier was in "free zone" under french control. German arrives there only in 1942. Anyway i can be wrong. May be belgian planes in free zone were given to germans ? I have no trace of them in french papers in july 40 when all plane of the free zone were checked. Matt |
Re: Captured Dh Moth
Hello @Snautzer
Dragon Rapide must be an english one. They left some of them in north of France, some in good state (pictures show that) in Orleans for example. Matt |

The combined details on aviation safety net are mostly from Malcolm Fillmore and John Hamlin's research. Perhaps most striking are the seller's wild claims with regard to the photo he is selling. No surprise I guess.... Cheers Stig |

Re: Captured Dh Moth
The GM+OS was a ex. Norwegian Army Air Force DH 82A Tiger Moth built on licence by the Army Aircraft Factory at Kjeller north of Oslo. Its Army Air Force serial number was 185.
Several ex. Norwegian military aircraft taken over by the Luftwaffe were assigned with Stammkennzeichen in the GM+O- series. |
