Re: Photo FE 2d?
Hello,
A nice photo of a british machine at : https://www.ebay.de/itm/Foto-XL-WK2-...oAAOSwvgheVSmQ Can anyone assist with the identity. I'm tempted to say RAF FE 2d, Possibly serial A5, but I'm not certain. Regards, Clint |
Re: Captured British Aircraft
Clint
You are ever so right. Aircraft in question is indeed the FE.2d A5 which was lost during its transit flight to St Omer 1 June 1916. Not very funny for its crew. Cheers Stig |
Re: Captured British Aircraft
Thanks for the confirmation Stig,
Regards, Clint |

Hello,
Today there is a photo of an Airco DH.4 in German hands at: https://www.ebay.de/itm/Foto-Flugzeu...cAAOSwTAheZ7vx Regards, Clint |
Re: Captured British Aircraft
Hello,
Since posting the last link to the Airco DH.4, I have received a copy of Les Rogers British Aviation Squadron Markings of World War I. On P.25 there are two photos of A2170, also a DH.4, of 25 Squadron with the drunken crescent moon image shown on the aircraft above, so perhaps it too is a 25 Squadron machine? One of the photos can be seen here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/drakegoodman/32292916315 Regards, Clint |
Re: Captured British Aircraft

Re: Captured British Aircraft
Looks pretty undamaged to me
Since A856 was lost on a night raid 21.9.1917, I suppose either the engine gave up or the aircrew lost their bearings and landed inside enemy territory. Is the prop gone or is it just alined horizontally? Cheers Stig |

This is not A4874. There were two aircraft with the code 4 from 40Sq shot down on the same date, 9 March 1917. This is the second one 6456. B Rgds Stig |
Re: Captured British Aircraft
Hi Stig,
Thanks for the correction. Careless of me. I see that the style of 4 is completely different between the two machines. Regards, Clint |
Re: Captured British Aircraft
Indeed Clint
Two different flights. A-flight used red digits (outlined in white) B-flight used white digits C-flight used blue digits (also outlined in white) Which is which on the photos? Even though I have many photos of each aircraft, the light varies and I don't know the shade of blue and red, so I leave it at that.... :) Cheers Stig |

Re: Captured British Aircraft
Thanks Clint ! According to the very good book The Sky Their Battlefield II page 129 we have on 06/11/1917 2lt RC Taylor of n°3 squadron lost in clouds flight landing at Sedan ; he left but driven east by wind came down (again) to land near Namur ; then re-took off to fly west but travelled south until finally driven down by weather and no oil.
No place is given. Bertrand |
Re: Captured British Aircraft
Hello Bertrand,
Thanks for the reply. Glad the new purchase is proving useful.:) Regards, Clint |
Re: Captured British Aircraft
Hello,
Currently on ebay is what is stated to be a Flieger Nachlass. Possibly. However most of the photos have been seen before. I have posted it here as at least Royal Aircraft Factory F.E.2b 7669 of 100 Squadron was new to me and along with the well known photo of F.E.2b 5206 of 20 Squadron shows a captured machine. No doubt, 7669 has also been seen be board users more familiar with the RFC than myself. Here are the photos: https://www.ebay.de/itm/Fotos-Fliege...UAAOSwMlNgBdSl Regards, Clint |

Re: Captured British Aircraft
Hello,
Currently on ebay is a photo album, which tbh, contains many familiar images. However, there is an interesting photo of a Bristol Fighter, which,if German ,is unusual. Its at: https://www.ebay.de/itm/363622534505...Bk9SR_qjpJmlXw Regards, Clint |
Re: Captured British Aircraft
Clint the F2B is almost certainly from 62 Sqn. the front 2 bars have been painted out, they also put the aircraft letter on the nose ( another captured one was C4630 "J" ).

Re: Captured British Aircraft
Hi Nick,
Thanks for the id on the Bristol Fighter. I rather wonder if it is not shown part way through a repaint job by its captors.A roundel can be seen on the wing, but at least in,the admittedly few, 62 Squadron F.2b photos I've seen none have the broad white band on the fuselage.Awaiting application of a cross perhaps? Have you seen the Air Britain work referenced by Andy Ma,in the Bristol MR.1 thread? Any 62 Squadron Bristol Fighters with a broad fuselage band? Regards, Clint |
Re: Captured British Aircraft
I agree with Nick
Looks very much like a 62 Sq aircraft. According to Les Rogers their particular three stripe markings were discontinued in late March 1918, so this aircraft may have been lost behind German lines between Jan - March. No 62 Sq had two disastrous days in March, the 12th and 13th, when they lost six aircraft. Unfortunately none of these aircraft are listed in the Bristol book with a code letter, but one of these six aircraft feels quite likely to be it. No 62 Sq had some more combat losses before April and that was on the 24th, 27th and 28th of March, but none of them seems to have ended up behind enemy lines. Cheers Stig |
Re: Captured British Aircraft
Thanks Stig.
Of the 6 lost on 12th / 13th , 5 were brought down intact; but letters apparently not recorded... B1250, B1251, C4824, B1207, B1268. C4630 "J" I mentioned was captured 19/5/18 but after squadron markings were discontinued. Usually--but not always---the crosses were marked on a white background. These are interesting notes on 62 Sqn. losses etc... Nick http://www.apw.airwar1.org.uk/62%20s...ses%201918.htm http://www.apw.airwar1.org.uk/62%20s...rew%201918.htm |
Re: Captured British Aircraft
