Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft
Hello,
Currently on ebay there is a photo of a Caudron G.3 at: https://www.ebay.fr/itm/DN191-Photog...wAAOSwnQ5eo87H Is this a G.3 R1 Rouler or does the lower wing just appear abbreviated because of the perspective? Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft
Hello
If you look at the engine, it’s seems to be a 10 cylinder Anzani radial (100 HP), a lot too powerful for a Rouleur, usually fitted with a 45 HP Anzani. The happy guy in front has a shining observer badge, so the photo could be taken at a school. Regards Jean Schreiber |

Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft
Hello,
Currently on ebay is a photo of a Caudron at: https://www.ebay.de/itm/115160764061...oAAOSwciZhyzfh Is this the R.4 Type 8? or R.12 The engines appear distinct from those of standard R.4 I've seen. Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft
Clint
My pennies are on a R.4 (three bay) The R.4 type 8 was a one off aircraft (not even mentioned by André Hauet), which among other things seems to have strengthened struts. As far as I know there is no known photo of the R.12 but according to both Hauet and Soltan/Davilla it was a re-engined R.11 and as such had only a two-bay wing span. Cheers Stig |
Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft
Hi Stig,
You see the engines as Renault 12Db then? That is the only source of my uncertainty. It may just be the Photo being of higher quality than others I've seen of the R.4,but somehow the enhines look smaller and neater than on other R.4 photos.I certainly think the fuselage looks like that of a R.4. Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft
Well Clint
As I read Soltan/Davilla (page 164) they say the R.4 could have either the Renault 12Db or the Hispano-Suiza 8A engines. Then French officialdom confused the matter with SFA calling the latter version R.19, while everyone else still called them R.4 I simplify it by just calling the lot R.4.... Happy New Year to you too! :) Cheers Stig |
Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft
Stig,
Currently on delcampe is a Caudron R.4 at: https://www.delcampe.net/en_GB/colle...419300572.html I assume since this one shows the more commonly seen engine, that this is a Renault 12Db powered machine and the one in the previous photo one with the Hispano 8Aa. Or not? I don't have the Hauet work you referred to previously. I take it that this is th WDF.Does it contain any more photos of the Hispano powered machine? Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft
At face value Clint, I would say yes to your question.
All photos (regardless of R.4 or R.11) show the Hispano engines to be triangular in shape. Not many photos of Renault powered R.4. Those I think are of less good quality and difficult to see. Looks much more rounded though..... Cheers Stig |
Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft
Hello,
Currently on ebay a nice photo of Caudron G.IV C.1871 'Loulou' of escadrille C64. https://www.delcampe.net/en_GB/colle...994181482.html Subsequently in German hands https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/caud...0084329890323/ Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft
Hello,
Currently on delcampe are a couple of photos of a Caudron,a R.11, I think being blessed by a priest https://www.delcampe.net/en_GB/colle...046255092.html https://www.delcampe.net/en_GB/colle...046254849.html The aircraft has a escargot ailé insignia on the nose. Any thoughts on whether this is a SAL.1 unit marking or something else. It appears to differ in detail from any Escadrille 1 marking i've seen Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft
Hello,
Currently on ebay some Interesting (?) photos of Caudron G.III 4054 with a Meerkat (earlier thansuspected advertising?) or is it a cat marking? https://www.ebay.fr/itm/405197485711...4AAOSwumVm0DzC https://www.ebay.fr/itm/405197490092...MAAOSw4lNm0D7D Also an early G.III C.56 https://www.ebay.fr/itm/405197492518...oAAOSwcUlm0D8w Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft
Well Clint
I can't imagine anyone would paint a meerkat on an aeroplane back in 1915 or so. Some 90-95% of the Esc personal would not have a clue what that was. I have seen a few in the wild in Botswana and Namibia but how well known would they have been in Europe? Really cute fellows by the way!! It surely is an angry/startled cat! A meerkat never reacts that way. Cheers Stig |
Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft
Hello,
Currently on ebay is a photo of Caudron R.11 C.3651 (I think) https://www.ebay.fr/itm/405249614364...Bk9SR7SvqKLFZA Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft
Very tricky digits Clint
I myself read them as C.5651, but I admit I am very hesitant doing so. Main reason is I believe the first and third digits are the same and since I only have Caudron R.11 in the 5000 range and none in the 3000 range, well that's it I guess. Looking at the second digit it then has to be a six since it is different from the first and third digit. Does that make any sense? Cheers Stig |
Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft
Hi Stig,
I must admit in terms of known R.11 serials your serial appears a lot more likely. That is there are a fair number of R.11 with C.55** serials on Albin Denis http://albindenis.free.fr/Site_escad...te_Caudron.htm For my part the only R.11 serial I have in the C.36** is C.3608 and even then, this is accepting the sellers caption because even with magnification the serial is not legible. However, I 'm going to send you a word copy of the photo I have just posted which you can magnify (say more than 400%) and which I argue shows the upper part of the first numeral being open to the left and the second numeral appears closed on the left where it loops at the bottom,we both agree that the third numeral is different. Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft
This is the problem we've had before, French "3"s and "5"s; this is Nieuport N.1539 (the serials are also on the wing tips) you can see the difference here between them. The Caudron looks like C.3531 to me.
I posted a couple of close-ups showing the numbers some time ago but can't find them. Regards Nick http://www.airwar.ru/image/idop/fww1.../nieup17-5.jpg |
Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft
Nick
Another friend of mine also thinks the SFA number is C3531 so you do have a point.... :) Cheers Stig |
Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft
Out of curiousity I looked at the photo without being swayed by previous answers.
I also think it reads C3531. |
Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft
Well, we seem to have a consensus.Thank you all for the replies.
