Photos USAAS Aircraft
Hello,
Today the following photos of US operated aircraft are on ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-WW...kAAOSw-SVeS-wy https://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-WW...MAAOSwvxBeqCpE https://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-WW...wAAOSwGIZeqCpj https://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-WW...QAAOSwbTNeqCnH https://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-WW...kAAOSw4tBeqCoH https://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-WW...gAAOSwY8teS-sk https://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-WW...MAAOSwHCNeS-wf https://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-WW...0AAOSwkfVeS-xV https://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-WW...wAAOSwijBeS-uj https://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-WW...kAAOSw6l9eS-tV I suspect that despite the captions some of the photos are state side postwar. Any help identifying the crashed aircraft gratefully received. Regards, Clint |

Re: Photos USAAS Aircraft
Hello,
Currently on ebay a photo of a Dorand AR-1 of the USAAS at: https://www.ebay.com/itm/WW1-U-S-Pho...oAAOSw5e5cXvdk It looks like No.244 but impossible to be certain that its not 244* Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos USAAS Aircraft
Clint
I think we can be pretty certain it is No 244 Casari identifies No 244 as delivered, but not any No 244x. Admittedly there are many non identified AR.2 delivered to the Yanks but as far as I can see this is an AR.1 (rhino exhaust) and their serial numbers did not go that far. Also if you look at the digits 244 they are in balance (centered) beneath the AR above. Cheers Stig |
Re: Photos USAAS Aircraft
Hi Stig,
Sound reasoning. I concur. to be honest I was just being (too?) cautious. While its not an area I feel any competence to comment doesn't http://albindenis.free.fr/Site_escad...ete_Dorand.htm indicate 244* was although not an option for the photo shown at least a viable number? Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos USAAS Aircraft
The Dorand has the US flag insignia of the 1st Aero.

Re: Photos USAAS Aircraft
Hello,
Currently on ebay a nice photo of two early USAAS aircraft, Martin TT serial 50 and a Curtiss JN-2, serial 47 perhaps? at: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Military-Bi...AAAOSwlBtesL3s Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos USAAS Aircraft
Clint
A very nice photo!! While the TT is indisputable I would venture an educated (oh well... :o ) guess and say the other aircraft is a JN-4B No 157. At this time all surviving JN-2 had been modified to JN-3 standard and was with No 1 Squadron (all having a star on their fins) Another reason is, not that I am a Curtiss Jenny expert, but because I have Robert Casari's 'Bible' by my side. At this time both the Martin and this particular Jenny was on a search for two missing fliers from bases in southern Calidornia (Dec 1916 -Jan 1917). Casari specifically mentions that TT No 50 was in on that search. Easy, peacy when you have the 'Bible' right in front of you.... :) Cheers Stig |
Re: Photos USAAS Aircraft
Hi Stig,
If you like the photo the seller has many more potentially interesting photos from the Woodhouse Collection. I haven't posted any of them because most are civilian aircraft or in a few cases post WW.I, but you may find him worth checking out. Thanks for the accurate info on the JN. I was definitely taking a guess on that one and seeing the 7 thought 47. Good to have the correct info. Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos USAAS Aircraft
Thanks Clint
Yes I have gone through the Woodhouse collection and saved some of them. Unfortunately most are quite indifferent to me.... Cheers Stig |

Re: Photos USAAS Aircraft
Hello,
Currently on ebay are photos of two USAAS aircraft at: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Biplane-pho...8AAOSw1g9fN6qJ 2800 is a Curtiss JN-4D, while the other aircraft is a DH-4 of some kind. The photos may be wartime or possibly the 1920s, the seller appears uncertain. There is also a seperate photo of a JN-4D 2589 at: https://www.ebay.com/itm/RPPC-WW1-er...AAAOSw-6xfOF-v Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos USAAS Aircraft
Clint
The group with four aircraft were all most likely taken at Kelly Field around 1919-20. Two photos visibly have ASMS on their fuselages and the JN-4D added text "Kelly-Field". A third photo has the building in the background also carrying the same letters. Reason for the appx date is that the "rear-ending" DH-4 seems to carry the serial 32167. That aircraft did not come off the production line until about November-December 1918. Cheers Stig |
Re: Photos USAAS Aircraft
Hello Stig,
Thanks for that. I could see that the DH-4 had a serial of some kind on top of the rudder, but couldn't read it. If you're happy with 32167 I can go with that. Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos USAAS Aircraft

Re: Photos USAAS Aircraft
Hello,
Currently on ebay are three photos of the Martin GMB,39055 somewhat marred by cheap pens at: https://www.ebay.de/itm/2621-Foto-Fl...gAAOSw8wZgAvmx https://www.ebay.de/itm/2622-Foto-Fl...4AAOSwpoBgAvvd https://www.ebay.de/itm/2623-Foto-Fl...EAAOSwM5JgAvws Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos USAAS Aircraft
Looks quite like the prototype alright
I confess I have for some time now wondered if this seller includes the pens when you have clinched a deal with him?..... Cheers Stig |
Re: Photos USAAS Aircraft
Hi Stig,
Yes, with my lack of knowledge of US military aircraft of the era, several edits were necessary until I noted the text with the helpful serial number.:) With regard to the pens, the quality of the pen needs to improve if the attempted bribe is to be successful. I might be cheap, but not that cheap:) Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos USAAS Aircraft
Hmmm
I thought you had bought the Casari book by now???!!! :) Honestly Clint, one of the best books Aeronaut ever produced!! Pens.....oh well.....even if cheap, a pen is always a pen....of course something the younger generation ain't seen nothing of....:p Ahhh, sweet youth. I still remember quite fondly the pencils we used to chew on. Sharpening one's teeth you know.....like young beavers.....;) Cheers Stig |
Re: Photos USAAS Aircraft
Speaking of youth, upon seeing the GMB photos, I had a wistful moment when I recalled the Kenneth Munson books, the ones with the profiles showing in one half the machine from the underside, and the other half the upper side of the aircraft, these beeing the first aircraft books I had and the first time I saw a GMB. Still got the book somewhere, but never unpacked it along with many others when I moved here.
Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos USAAS Aircraft
Hi Guys
Clint found a photo here https://www.ebay.com/itm/1910s-1920s...IAAOSwVNxgQBiZ and just because its been around for some time, didn't think it was good enough to post. I differ, since this time the photo is very well reproduced on e-bay and it also shows a quite interesting Standard (Fisher Body built) SJ-1 It shows one of three SJ-1 converted at Wright Field to take the Curtiss OX-5 engine. The seller seems to be so focused on the photographer that he cannot see the forest because of all the trees. Aircraft is no JN-4 and not even a J-1 as given by Baugher on his site (no such designation actually existed) The use of another SJ-1's rudder also adds to the dimension. All-in-all a very nice photo! I exchanged the one I already had and downloaded to this one!! Cheers Stig |
Re: Photos USAAS Aircraft
Hi Stig,
Intersting information and good to learn new information on the SJ-1 (as I now know:) ) Here's another one I suspect may also have been seen before given the origin of the photo. I take it the A3340 on the back of the photo is the aircraft serial. If so here is a photo of Curtiss JN-4D A3340 : https://www.ebay.com/itm/Love-Field-...EAAOSwJTNgQPdD Striking markings. I take it, its still in military service based on the the Curtiss N-8 serial 60 in the background? Regards, cLINT |
Re: Photos USAAS Aircraft
Well Clint
First of all I am not able to verify which sub-version of the JN-4 this is. Secondly I am not convinced the 'A3340' refers to a US serial number. It could just as well be a Smithsonian negative file number. Taking a random number and say it was a 'Jenny' and you have a pretty good chance it was since it was a very numerous aircraft indeed. Cheers Stig |
Re: Photos USAAS Aircraft
Hello,
Currently on ebay is a photo of a Wright Model B at: https://www.ebay.com/itm/40301290111...wAAOSwr9hg-heX Described by the seller as the army's second airplane, but Joe Baugher has serial number 2 alloted to a Curtiss, while there are a number of serials for Wright Model B aircraft. So which serial number was assigned to the machine shown? Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos USAAS Aircraft
Hi Clint
Still haven't got the Bible? :) Casari says this was the "second" Wright A for the Army. The first one seems by some to have been the one in which Lt Selfridge was killed when flown by Orville Wright. So this one, which was in fact the first one accepted by the US Army, became SC No 1. When seen here it had been modified/rebuilt as a Model B (during Nov and Dec 1910). Seems it was damaged before being stored for the winter 1910-11, because in Jan 1911 money was required for repairs....and fundraising was made to the public! The SC was obviously very short of money or perhaps more likely didn't want it any more so nothing really came out of all that. In May 1911 the aircraft was donated to the Smithsonian Institution. This photo (undated) was probably taken just before the hand over. Cheers Stig |
