Re: Photo Albatros D.Va

To be honest Clint, this looks very much like a D.III to me

Slabsided fuselage (oval with the D.V) and the rather "cut" fin/rudder vs the more rounded one on the D.V. Also the upper wing is (or at least seems to be) higher put than the D.V.

No help with Jasta colours I'm afraid.

Cheers
Stig

Re: Photo Albatros D.Va

Hi Stig,

Clearly further attention needed on my part to the rudder in future. In all honesty I actually saw rounded fuselage rather than slab sided D.III hence thread title. This is in fact becoming a bit of a habit for me on here with D.III/D.Va identities.

Hello,

Currently on ebay is a photo of an Albatros D.Va of Jasta Boelcke at:

Does anyone recognise the markings and have a serial number for the machine or a name for the pilot?

Hello,

Currently on ebay is an Albatros D.Va named Lini of Jasta 16b (?) at:

https://www.ebay.de/itm/Foto-Flieger...wAAOSwZzdfmxCG

https://www.ebay.de/itm/Foto-Flieger...4AAOSwls5fmxGI

The identity of Jasta 16b is tentative as I'm assuming that it belonged to the same sellers photographs of the crashed Pfalz D.III D.4034/17 known to belong to that unit at:

Hello,

Currently on ebay is a photo of a crashed Albatros D.Va D.7214/17 at:

https://www.ebay.de/itm/133943509296...cAAOSw9wJhnSrq

It is captioned as belonging to FFA 42.But this seems unlikely. Does anyone have a unit for this machine?

Clint this is a D.III (OAW), with D.V - type rudder and crosses marked further forward.

Darn Nick :)

Flat sides, D.III alright. Missed that too. Stab in the back using D.V rudder on some D.IIIs if you ask me....:D

Re: Photo Albatros D.Va

Hello Both,

Agree Stig, the curved rudders on OAW built D.III are really a swine.

Thanks Nick for the correct Identity. I thought knowing that the machine was a D.III (OAW) would render discovery of the unit and the serial more straightforward. But no.Who knew that the natural habitat of the D.III (OAW) was Switzerland:)

Re: Photo Albatros D.Va

Clint this MAY be from Kest 4 or 5 who were at Freiburg ( only 40 miles from Basel) at the time and probably overflew the area; Kest 4's earlier single-seaters had black tails.
Later in 1918 both were opposing the Independent Force raids ( re-organised as Jastas).

Re: Photo Albatros D.Va

Hi Nick,

Kest 5 appears an interesting possibility. Some of the aircraft in the following photo have a fuselage band which resembles that in the ebay photo, though different in detail - a unit marking (??):

Re: Photo Albatros D.Va

Hi Clint. the bands in the photo are the pilots individual marking in various colours ( common in many units), the light band on the OAW-D.III is the natural varnished ply fuselage with tail and forward fuselage a dark colour.

Clint no."6" Jasta 37 is a D.III, taken at Wynghene (but spelt diffently on the back).

Hello,

Currently on ebay are two photos of Albatros D.Va

D.5766/17.The fuselage stripe looks like that seen on Jasta 14 machines.

And a machine flown by Josef Veltjens of Jasta 18

Re: Photo Albatros D.Va

In connection with aircraft D.5766/17 possibly of Jasta 14 in the previous post in this thread after considering the Z in a circle as the personal marking I've been looking at members of Jasta 14 whose surname begins with Z.

The most prominent of these is Oberleutnant Werner Zech.Has anyone seen any photos of other machines flown by him, either with Jasta 14 or other units? If so, do they have the Z in a circle as their personal markings?

Captioned as flown by Victor Carganico by the seller. Does anyone know which unit he was operating with when the photo was taken? I suspect FEA 11.

The same seller has a number of other photos of German WW.I aircraft for sale including of Fokker D.VII. Unfortunately there are one or two duplicates from yesterday's post on the Albatros D.II,but it allows the viewer to see all with just one click. Which seems to myself at least preferable.
