Re: Photo Bristol Aircraft
Clint
A rather indifferent picture (for me that is), but I am puzzled by the name written after the date. Any interpretation perhaps? Place name? Serial 43 had been sent to Eastchurch (May) after its crash in March and basically stayed there until sent on a roundtrip to various bases, beginning with Felixstowe, in August. Serial 153 was in Portsmouth (having arrived 13 July) and since it was there for a Royal review, I doubt it would be anywhere else on the 18th. Cheers Stig |
Re: Photo Bristol Aircraft
Hello Stig,
I actually agree, not a brilliant photo. I posted because a] its a relatively rare aircraft and b] because the seller has material which I thought might interest other board users, but being either civilian or post war, was not material I would post myself. With regard to the name, I would tend to favour Hilsea in the Portsmouth area. I'm not definite though. However given both 43 and 153 seem to have been east coast based, not improbable either. Regards, Clint |
Re: Photo Bristol Aircraft
Thanks Clint
Hilsea....oh well....I would never have guessed that by myself..... :) Seems to be a part of Portsmouth actually (I looked it up), so I buy that! Since No 153 after all was right there, my guess is we are one step ahead of the seller....:D Cheers Stig |
Re: Photo Bristol Aircraft
Hello,
Currently on ebay is a photo of damaged Bristol F2B Fighter A7224 at : https://www.ebay.de/itm/Feldpost-Abg...kAAOSw1bJetbMP Can anyone supply the unit ofA7224? Actually I now have it 48 Squadron. Regards, Clint |
Re: Photo Bristol Aircraft
Well Clint
Anything wrong with No 48Sq? Pictured aircraft was lost 21 Sep 1917 (not October) All sources I have agree about that. I take it your request about a unit for A7724 is a printing error? Perhaps you are still using winter gloves?:D (Just teasing...) Cheers Stig |
Re: Photo Bristol Aircraft
Hello Stig,
Apologies, I posted the image just prior to rushing off to pursue another activity and when I returned did a search. As you'll see I amended my post between the two events. Hopefully it didn't take you to write too long winter gloves or not. Regards, Clint |
Re: Photo Bristol Aircraft
No worries Clint
Interesting photo, that's the main thing! Cheers Stig |

Re: Photo Bristol Aircraft
Interesting photo Clint (even if the quality is pretty bad)
Checking "our usual" site very few F2a (could only find two) ended up with the TS/TRS squadrons and both were with No 38TS, including this one. I know extremely little about these units and cannot identify them from any markings visible. However, since the seller's statement seems very detailed, I would say there is a good chance the flipside says the same thing, but is it correct? Cheers Stig |
Re: Photo Bristol Aircraft
Hello Stig,
I too checked the usual site and was tempted to post 38 TS, but as you say the seller does give the unit and the location. Netheravon being the base of 24 TS according to Royal Air Force Training and Support units. Also I note that the usual site does mention an engine fire with 38TS, but not that A3319 was SOC and the dates end in 1917 whereas the seller has c.1918. So not possible to be definite, but as you'll recognise about as full information as we're likely to get at this distance in time. Regards, Clint |

You will find a similar "uncropped" photograph in the late Jack Bruce's, Britain's First Warplanes. The photo in Britain's First Warplanes has two additional personalities - one at each end (both excluded)! The photo in B'sFW (p.5), has the following caption: Officers of the Royal Naval Air Service at Hilsea at the time of the Royal Review of the Fleet, July 1914. At left (excluded) is FSL C. Draper; fourth, fifth and sixth from left are, respectively, Cdr. C. R. Sansom, Lt. R. L. G. Marix and Capt. I. T. Courtney RMLI. The aircraft is a Bristol T.B.8, either No. 43 or No. 153. See: Britain's First Warplanes A Pictorial Survey of the First 400 Naval and Military Aircraft. Bruce, J. M. Poole:Arms and Armour Press,1987. p.5 Col. PS. The book contains potted histories of both No. 43, and No. 153. |

Hello,
Currently on ebay is a photo of the Bristol B.R.7 at: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1913-Rena...IAAOSwyWZf-YVr Regards, Clint |
Re: Photo Bristol Aircraft
Quite rare I think
Not seen many BR.7s Another interesting post card is this one https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Monoplane...75.c100623.m-1 I have never seen any photo before of the crash It is also interesting to see how quickly a photo could be turned into a post card. Since the accident is usually quoted as happening on the 18th (not 17/7) and the postcard seems to be dated 5th of August, it leaves us with 18 days in between. Does the signature on the back says Gordon? Could it possibly be Gordon England?? No idea, but whoever it was, a bit odd post card to send to what could be interpreted as his sweetheart? What type of aircraft I hear you wonder? Ah yes, the Bristol-Prier two-seater c/n 108. B Rgds Stig |

Confess I am more comfortable with the listed 72 Sq Cheers Stig |
Re: Photo Bristol Aircraft
Hi Stig it IS 72 Sqn in Mesopotamia some time after March 1918 with "C" Flight; the right-hand one in the line-up has a white 5-zig-zag personal marking seen in another shot. At least 2 had no fuselage cocardes ( I think the Fight had 8 M1s).

Re: Photo Bristol Aircraft
Just remembered; the Shuttleworth Collection ( I live near there) has a replica M1c in these markings flying as C4918 ( G-BWJM) with an original 110 Le Rhone.
Can't vouch for the serial though but that was an M1c. Nick |
Re: Photo Bristol Aircraft
Hi Nick
Yes, 72 Squadron operated 13 M.1C in all, probably all with C-flight. The first two, C4914 and C4915, are known to have been assigned already in Jan 1918 to the unit. Exactly how many there were when the unit was officially resurrected in Basra on 2 March 1918, is not listed in my sources. There is a nice book published by Cross & Cockade called 'Wings over Mesopotamia' which I found very good covering the period 1914-1919. Pity the photo is not better. I liked the Bristol Bullet. Cheers Stig |

No this is 39 Sq.
It was so assigned and the diamond marking also fits other photos of that unit. Cheers Stig |
Re: Photo Bristol Aircraft
Thanks Stig,
That will teach me to rely on Wikipedia, without checking the unit markings! Also the seller had a question mark after Kirton in Lindsey.Double! Regards, Clint |
Re: Photo Bristol Aircraft
The Bristol at Duxford Museum ( E2581 / 13) has similar markings as did the original AIRFIX model from the 1950s ; I'm sure you don't remember though !.
