Photo French Flying Boat
Hello,
Currently on Delcampe is a photo of a french flying boat with the code G.28 at: https://www.delcampe.net/fr/collecti...841179256.html I believe that the code indicates that the machine was based at Guernsey and it is a FBA, but which version? Regards, Clint |
Re: Photo French Flying Boat
Hello Clint
With his Hispano engine, it's most probably a FBA type H, based at Guernesey, but the shots have been probably taken elsewhere. Regards Jean |
Re: Photo French Flying Boat
Hello Jean,
Thanks for the reply. A couple of follow up questions if I might. You feel it is definitely not a type S. Admittedly Lucien Morareau in les Aeronefs de l'aviation maritime does have the Type H in use on Guernsey, but not the type S. Its just they look so alike I thought I'd better check. My second question you say the shots were probably taken elsewhere. I wondered why you felt this was so, as it sewems to say Guernsey on the back of the postcard. Regards, Clint |
Re: Photo French Flying Boat
Hello Clint
Lucien Morareau states in «*l’aviation Maritime pendant la Grande Guerre*» that FBA type H were deployed at Guernesey in 1918. The radiator shape can give some doubts, this one on the photo generally associated with the type S, but that's a standard part provided by more than one supplier. On the back of the photo I read “Souvenir le 4-11-18” followed by a signature. Regards Jean |

Hello,
Currently on ebay are a number of photos of FBA Type H serial D12 of CAM Dunkerque at: https://www.delcampe.net/fr/collecti...030794051.html https://www.delcampe.net/fr/collecti...030792449.html https://www.delcampe.net/fr/collecti...030791609.html https://www.delcampe.net/fr/collecti...030790103.html Regards, Clint |
Re: Photo French Flying Boat
Pity the true serial number is over painted on the port side.
One photo shows the aircraft from the starboard side and too far away for any serial to be read, D.12 was the CAM's code. Cheers Stig |
Re: Photo French Flying Boat
Hi Stig,
As you say a pity. Here however, is a sister ship so to speak FBA Type H of CAM Dunkerque D11 serial No.332 : https://www.ebay.de/itm/tolle-alte-K...UAAOSwDlZevwT4 Regards, Clint |
Re: Photo French Flying Boat
Thanks Clint
Yes, I have photos of that aircraft before. Cheers Stig |
Re: Photo French Flying Boat
Hello,
Currently on ebay there is a photo of a flying boat which may or may not be french, I've assumed that the L2 means that it is a Lorient based machine but this may not be the case. Does anyone recognise the type of flying boat shown or even whether the uniform indicates that it is a french officer? The photo is at : https://www.ebay.com/itm/Antique-sep...AAAOSwubRfRYgc Regards, Clint |
Re: Photo French Flying Boat
Hello,
Currently on ebay is a photo of a Leveque Flying boat at: https://www.ebay.it/itm/313826358055...IAAOSw4KRh14Ob I'm not certain whether this is military or not.Although I suspect not. The same would apply to these photos of a Nieuport Floatplane: https://www.ebay.it/itm/294707994521...MAAOSwoFBh14Oo https://www.ebay.it/itm/313826359169...cAAOSwDvBh14Oj As well s several photos of Farman Seaplanes, although there are naval personnel in several of the the following photos: https://www.ebay.it/itm/294708032992...wAAOSwaI9h14ZR https://www.ebay.it/itm/294707983657...gAAOSwX8lh14OS https://www.ebay.it/itm/313826357476...AAAOSw9qRh14OW But no military personnel in the Breguet Floatplane photo: https://www.ebay.it/itm/313826358706...gAAOSwDtRh14Of Regards, Clint |
Re: Photo French Flying Boat
Hello,
Currently on ebay are a number of photographic stereo glass plates,of varying quality and interest of French WW.I era Naval aircraft. Representative is this unusually marked (?) aircraft https://www.ebay.fr/itm/355864816054...cAAOSweopmkW-Z All the images can be found here https://www.ebay.fr/sch/i.html?_dkr=...ravion&_sop=10 Any help with the identity of marked aircraft would be welcome as the subject is outside my comfort zone. Regards, Clint |
Re: Photo French Flying Boat
Hi Clint
I checked with my French contacts and all the photos are believed to have been taken at Cazaux in the spring of 1918 The aircraft marked T70H is a Tellier 200hp flying boat. This particular aircraft was only in service for two months (April-May) before being transferred to the US Navy Since Tellier used two different engine types, it is tricky so say which one it is. The other flying boats are various FBA 100 - 150 hp models. The Farman floatplanes did not receive any comments. Cheers Stig |
Re: Photo French Flying Boat
Hi Stig,
Thanks again. A shame about the lack of responses to the Farmans, since as you know there are a number of options for aircraft based on the F.40.It would be nice if the seller posts more.Since the sellers postings seem to be ongoing fingers crossed. Well anyway, enjoy your holiday. A cruise again? Regards, Clint |
Re: Photo French Flying Boat
Will do Clint
Sitting in Liverpool waiting to board M/S Bolette on Friday. First time ever in 'Pool, so a lot to see. Never a giant fan of the Beatles but I really enjoyed Gerry Marsden and his Pacemakers. When we crossed the Mersey this morning I just couldn't help but singing Ferry cross the Mersey. Felt really good even in my tired bones.... Cheers Stig |
