Which location in the handwriting?
 

Hello all,

In a flight log of Adibert Braun (I./NJG 3), he noticed on 21th January 1945 'Notlandung bei ……………..' see enclosed page.

As he was transferring a He219 from Rostock to Denmark, I do hope that one of our German or Danish TOCH-members can decipher the name of the location. It seems logical that this place was somewhere in Schleswig-Holstein or - if Braun flew straight to Grove - in Denmark.

Tuff one (for mee at least)

I interpret the log entry of the 21th January 1945 as:
TO 09:30 - Landing 11:40 flight duration 130 minutes - distance 865 km.?
distance Rostock - Grove in streight line is app. 300 km.
Distance Rostock - Grove if measured via Schleswig Holstein is app. 400 km.
If the flying distance of 865 km. is correct, something do not add up here.

I tried to manipulate the png file, to see if the log entry could be made more clear. Not much luck.
My finest guess is:
..emtei.

Which do not relate to any place in Denmark to my knowlede at this moment.

Thank you for your input!

I fully agree that the travel distance of 865 km (if correct) is quite strange, because it means that Braun first flew 2 hours and 10 minutes across Germany first before making an emergency landing at an unknown location.

As the TOCH forum first remained quiet, I also put this question on the Luftwaffe Research Group forum, where members read something like '...stedt' and/or Sarstedt. I think they are right, but this does not solve the questions that Braun's flight has raised either :o

Egeskov miswritten as "Egerskov"?

Hello Roland,

I never read/recognized Egeskov as another option, but I agree that it could be read that way. At least it would be a logical location for a transfer flight to Denmark. On the other hand:

1) I guess that leading Danish air war historians like Sören Flendstedt or Jörn Junker to name a few would have known about this crash on land and
2) so far a majority read '...stedt' and if the first letter is a 'S' indeed, Saersted would be another option.

It remains however strange (with both options) that Braun flew so many kilometers and over more than two hours before he made an emergency landing. I have no reasonable explanation for that.

Hi Marcel,

I wonder what the weather was like on the day of the transfer flight. It's not inconceivable that poor weather hampered his return to the ground, leading to a forced landing in the end.

when compared to 'bei' the second to last and penultimate letters of the third word look like 'e' and 'i'

sounds crazy but I'm reading it as either Igersheim (Baden-Württemberg) which is approx 723km from Rostock by road, or Gersheim , Saarland which is approx 843km from Rostock. Perhaps he was hoping to escape to the Allies?

Winds in Denmark from SE.

In UK cold, near freezing, overcast
