My turn ...

And finally.................:
I think the first part are the three letters "Gef" for captured, caught, taken. So the entire caption would read: "Taken 11.41".

Re: date on back of photo

"Gef" is also often used as an abbreviation for "gefallen", meaning killed (KIA).
I guess the front of the photo would give more context.

Re: date on back of photo

On the front of the photo a crashed Ju 52 can be seen so I guess "gefallen" is the most likely solution.

Thanks everyone for your help. Very much appreciated.

Re: date on back of photo

To use the word "gefallen" only with an crashed aircraft is more than unusual. One would rather use the words "abgestürzt/ abgeschossen". "Gefallen" fits with soldier portraits or the like. In addition, the first letter doesn't look like an "G".

Re: date on back of photo

I agree that the first letter does not look like a "G". It look smore like an "A" and the second letter looks like an "s". But "As" doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Re: date on back of photo

It may depend on which of the several German handwriting styles the author of the photo caption was using:

Re: date on back of photo

Yes Larry, I'm aware of that. The Sütterlin script was used from 1920 onwards and became the official script in Germany in 1935. September 1st 1941 it was declared "illegal" but most people still used it for daily, unofficial use.

So I think this is indeed Sütterlin.

Re: date on back of photo

Perhaps we are back again with Frank's thinking, 6/11.41?

Maybe it is simply the date when the Ju 52 came to grief?

Cheers
Stig
