Re: Photos French Aircraft

Well Clint

To paraphrase Adolf Galland the interesting photos in this lot are the first and the last.

The odd experimental Henri Farman (photo 1) is especially interesting.
Why this aircraft is where it is stated to be feels also a bit odd to me, but who knows?
I have it listed myself as a HF 36 variant, poss built before (or after... :) )

First time I see the complete photo of the SA.2 with the Nieuports in the background (photo 17). Previously I have it as a "close-up" of the SA.2 only.

Cheers
Stig

Re: Photos French Aircraft

Hi Stig,

I believe that the Farman in link No.1 is a F.45 as is this:

https://www.ebay.fr/itm/AVIATION-PHO...oAAOSwZ-5fnRrb

Looking at Kees Kort's site once again the F.36 looks quite distinctive though the tailplane is not unlike that on the F.45:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/varese...5561/lightbox/

The Spad A.2 S.31 of N.73 can still be seen on the Spad thread of this board. I note the seller is the same in both cases.

Clint

Re: Photos French Aircraft

Hi Guys

I agree, the first aircraft is the F.45
Missed out on that one in Soltan/Davilla's book.
The funny thing is that they have the aircraft both on p 247 (as the F.45) and again on page 256 (as unknown #4), and of course it was the latter I spotted...

Also must say the Farman aircraft are in a terrible order in the book.
Things would have been a lot easier if the various Farman types had been presented in
a) company order
b) type order

Is this e-bay silly week or something?
Below the four Air Aces mags, I have some sport mags, super bowl programs, loads of National Geographics etc, etc but no photos what so ever.

No page two either.....

Seller seems to be some Mook152005 (37 items) and none has any aviation connection what so ever, except the four Air Aces mags.

Hello,

Currently on delcampe is a photo of aircraft of C227, I assume at:

https://www.delcampe.net/fr/collecti...331825941.html

The front row has Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutters in the foreground with some type (s) of Letord in the background the second row is composed of Caudron aircraft.

Re: Photos French Aircraft

Tnx for this Clint

Escadrille 227 had 5 Letord in mid-1917 and Sopwith 1A2 early 1917

Could it be A/F of La cheppe (Marne) where 227 was from 1/4/1917 to 4/7/1917 ?

Thanks for the response. Interesting information. It sounds like you have a good source to hand.Does it give any information on the serials of the Sopwith 1A2 or Letord with C227?

Hello,

I have a couple of questions concrning french WW.I aircraft.

1. What is the following aircraft, the fuselage is not unlike that of Letord aircraft, but it has rearwards facing engines:

2. Can someone please identify the unit markings shown on this Voisin?:

Hello,

Currently on ebay are a collection of photos and negatives of french aircraft, perhaps the nicest of which is Spad S.VII S.247

https://www.ebay.fr/itm/335370758472...Bk9SR8SP5JLlYw

I know from Albin Denis site that S.247 served at one time with SPA 103. Is anyone aware of other units which flew this machine?

Also is the Morane Saulnier with the unusual wing bracing the Type U?

Regards,

Clint

Stig Jarlevik 29th April 2024 13:06

Re: Photos French Aircraft

Can't help you with the SPAD Clint, but the Morane is the Type AC.

The Type U was never built.

musec04 29th April 2024 13:28

Re: Photos French Aircraft

Thanks Stig,

I was growing increasingly uncertain about the Type U identity anyway. Like yourself no doubt I looked at the Lela volume on Morane Saulnier where it does say under the line drawing precisely that. I may be seeing something that isn't there. I thought that the photo shows a large windscreen immediately behind the machine gun housing, but presumably whatever it is,is behind the plane, not on it.But then would a prototype have has an MG mounted anyway. Nope.

Well Clint

Confess I must hand it to the photographer that he constantly missed out all the interesting
bits (the IDs) :)

However, and that must clearly be by mistake (:D), he actually managed to get one with the well
handled Bre 14!
The number is just beyond my certainty. Do I so see No 2484 or what?
It is most likely visible on the original glass plate.... (grumble... )

Hi Stig,

Fair comments I'm afraid. The serial on the Bre.14 A2 certainly could be as you suggest.Could be.

Here's another one more clearly readable, but for me at least of lesser interests as clearly postwar.

Hi Stig,

Yes I see that number now you've written it :),not sure how I read it before, but undecided until now. Also the markings of BR 66. Albin Denis has the photo too,but without serial and it is useful to be able to expand the ebay photo.A result.

Re: Photos French Aircraft

Hello,

Currently on ebay are a collection of photos of French aircraft from the Great War. Unfortunately several are either a little small or frankly not obviously interesting shots. There are however a couple of interesting photos of Sopwith 1A2 including one named Pere Alphonse. The item also has an envelope marked SOP 105 so that is a possibility for the unit, though no unit makings are visible.

https://www.ebay.fr/itm/166992287408...Bk9SR-Sm7bPGZA

A further Sopwith 1A2,possibly of F 52 from what can be seen of the markings can be seen here

As usual the seller has further photos which can be found here

Re: Photos French Aircraft

Hello,

I'm looking for some assistance with a couple of French aircraft and their STAe numbers.

If I read the number correctly this is possibly a Voisin Type 10 of Escadrille V16

https://www.delcampe.net/en_GB/colle...155318980.html

I believe that based on known STAe numbers this Caudron G.III E2 probably has the full number 5298?

Stig Jarlevik 29th November 2024 16:18

Re: Photos French Aircraft

Two tricky ones Clint

I would say, yes it is a Vosin XBn2 since its serial seems tobe V.26(82) or something!

The two first digits must be 26 while the other two are really too fuzzy.
What makes you say Esc V16?

The G.III is even worse, very worn first digit. I would rather have it as a 2 or 3 but that does
not fit the known serial ranges.

Cheers
Stig

musec04 29th November 2024 19:26

Re: Photos French Aircraft

Thanks for the reply Stig.

It seems we agree on the G.III E2.That said what I could see of the blurred numeral looked very like the 2 that can be seen. But as you're aware 2298 falls in the middle of a series of G.IV.

Apologies for the V16 error. 'Unsticky' fingers on my part. I meant of course V116. Baed on David Méchin's artwork on Albin Denis at http://albindenis.free.fr/Site_escad...adrille116.htm which is not to say that you're incorrect when seeing the first two digits as 26. Could be.

Regards,

Clint

Stig Jarlevik 29th November 2024 21:33

Re: Photos French Aircraft

Agree Clint

I do hope the Caudrons are not a repetition of the Nieuport, but at face value, yes the G.IV
do create a problem here.

Regarding the Voisin I am pretty certain we have a V.2600 + serial.

I think it is a Packard-Le Pére LUSAC 11.
The US AEF requested two to be sent to Europe in Sep 1918 (No 42130-131).
Later one more was sold to France (No 42133)

No idea which one this is.

Re: Photos French Aircraft

Hi Stig. I think this is the Test Centre at Orly in Nov.-Dec. 1918 ( "Acceptance Park No. 1"). Most likely 42133 (they still used "SC" for Signal Corps), tail marking is......
L
USA
C.11
.....this is the ex-French one now in the US National Museum with re-painted camouflage and designator. Some went to McCook Field with "P" tail numbers.

Stig Jarlevik 20th December 2024 00:40

Re: Photos French Aircraft

Could be Nick

However the US requested aircraft would surely have carried the same fin markings?

How certain are you? :)

Stig

Buckeye30 20th December 2024 12:06

Re: Photos French Aircraft

I can't be positive but as I remember the French example had US cocardes removed (none in this picture); these designators were also on USAS LUSAC.11s (mostly this style) but with some variations.........
SC.42138 at McCook was marked
"L
USA
C.11
P
54
S.C.
42138"
---------- 40015 was marked-
"USA
C.11
40015
P
53"
Both had US rudder stripes and both S.C. and A.S. prefixes were used though "Air Service" had been authorised on 24 May 1918. A LUSAC at the Packard car plant in Detroit with a mock-up of a Bugatti engine had similar tail markings to Clint's original photo.
These are the 3 fields at the Orly base; I may be mistaken about the location but there are photos showing a similar line of trees though they would no doubt be very common.
