Hello,

Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Hello,
Currently on ebay is a photo of a crashed Mitsubishi Ki-46 at: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-WW...8AAOSwlhVgBiIr Is that the emblem of the 38th Dokuritsu Chutai on the tail?. Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
It is, also the emblem of the earlier 38th Sentai in the Phillipines and Formosa.
Nick |
Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Hello Nick,
Thanks. Is that just a polite way of telling me its more likely a 38th Sentai machine:) ? As indeed is the case with 38 Dokuritsu Chutainot emerging from 38 Sentai until 10 July 1945. Given the war ended when it did 38 Sentai is much more likely. For those not aware of the site there are some nice Ki-46 and Ki-45 profiles at: http://www.gahoh.net/traffic/ww2/pro...5-46/index.php Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Hello,
Currently on yahoo.co.jp are some Nakajima Ki-27 photos at : https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/e472550216 Scroll down the page please. Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Hi Clint. You know I always try to be polite !
I also thought the 38th, before it's re-designation, and the landscape looks more Phillipines than Japan. Cheers Nick |
Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Hello,
Currently on ebay is a photo of a Mitsubishi Ki-2 at: https://www.ebay.com/itm/zq17-Imperi...cAAOSwjhZgD5C2 Also another couple of photos on the site aucfree at: https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl...4QMyhMegQIARBr https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl...4QMyg_egQIARBP Several sourcesmention that the Ki-2 aircraft saw out their days as trainers, but I've not seen any particular units referenced in this regard. So is anyone aware of any training unit flying Ki-2 after 07.12.1941? Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Looks like a Ki-2-I with s/n (c/n) 30 built in 1934.
Since the last aircraft (Ki-2-II) were built in 1938 pure logic says survivors must have been used for crew/bomber training long into the war years. Why scrap anything that is still useful? Cheers Stig |
Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Hi Stig,
Very much my own thinking too. However, it would be nice to have ideally, some photos of Ki-2 from the 1941+ period and some knowledge of which units operated them. It seems that former frontline aircraft of both the JAAF and the JNAF operated subsequently by training units are very poorly covered compared aircraft of a simialar type in other airforces. It would be interesting to know if this is because people used to european alphabets find Japanese publications hard to read or whether the information has not been published in Japanese either. Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Hello,
Currently on ebay are some photos of JAAF aircraft, all claimed to be original, but given the price, I'm not certain, as follows: Mitsubishi Ki-67 https://www.ebay.com/itm/WWII-Japane...gAAOSwRRpgHeQq https://www.ebay.com/itm/Org-Photo-U...QAAOSw3R5gHVHD https://www.ebay.com/itm/Org-Photo-U...4AAOSwguhgHVHg Nakajima Ki-43 https://www.ebay.com/itm/Org-Photo-C...AAAOSwK21gHVMr Kawasaki Ki-45 https://www.ebay.com/itm/Org-Photo-U...0AAOSwDvZgHVPr Mitsubishi Ki-46 https://www.ebay.com/itm/Org-Photo-U...EAAOSwmHRgHVBq Mitsubishi Ki-57 https://www.ebay.com/itm/WWII-Japane...0AAOSwpJ5gHeWq Nakajima Ki-84 https://www.ebay.com/itm/Org-Photo-U...YAAOSwXQtgHVKV https://www.ebay.com/itm/Org-Photo-U...wAAOSwa4hgHVJr Regards, Clint |

Hi Clint. This is 19th Sentai probably on Leyte, one of the unit insignia using a stylised number ie. "1" and "9".

Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Hello,
Currently on ebay are two photos of JAAF aircraft : 1. A flightline of Mitsubishi Ki-51 https://www.ebay.com/itm/30409936773...IAAOSwJcJhEKXe 2. Does anyone have an opinion? https://www.ebay.com/itm/30409936236...QAAOSw4ZhhEKVT 3. This is also rather unusual,if the sellers' caption is at all accurate.Which it may well not be. https://www.ebay.com/itm/38365678702...kAAOSwWnReNFYF Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Photo 2 looks like one of the Navy Gloster Sparrowhawks with cowling removed.
Photo 3 Army Type 92 Recon. (Mitsubishi 2MR8). Nick |
Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Hi Nick,
Thanks for the response. I had identified the Army Type 92 Reconnaissance aka 2MR8 in picture 3,hence my comment about the item being unusual.I'm pretty sure I have not previously seen a Pacific War era example of this type, albeit given the production numbers I guess it is far from impossible that the aircraft saw use with training establishments after withdrawl from frontline units.I would love to see more info on any 1941-45 use of the 2MR8 if anyone has anything. Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Hello,
Currently on ebay are two, admittedly less than stellar, photos of Mitsubishi Ki-21 captioned as New Guinea,so perhaps 14 Sentai machines at: https://www.ebay.com/itm/31363977717...cAAOSwdjhhGajb Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Hello,
Currently on ebay is a aerial photo of a Nakajima Ki-43 of 11 Sentai at: https://www.ebay.com/itm/16502476114...QAAOSwtwhhHQZ3 The item is described as a poster panel, suggesting it may have already been widely seen. But its new to me for wht ever that is worth. Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Hi Clint. It's a Ki.84 which replaced the Ki.43s.
Regards Nick |
Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Hi Nick,
Yes it is,and fairly obviously so. I shouldn't post in a hurry. Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
It's also the Ki-84 once owned by the Planes of Fame Air Museum. The photo is from the late 60's with the "tall" American flying it with the canopy open. I believe there is a video of it as well.https://ww2db.com/images/air_ki84_2.jpg

Hello,
Currently on ebay is a photo of a Nakajima Ki-49 of 2 Chutai 74 Sentai at: https://www.ebay.com/itm/15457936570...gAAOSwAo1hIfZj Given that there is a colour illustration of the aircraft lifted from Eduardo Cea's Bombers of the Imperial Japanese Army 1939-1945 its possible that this photo has been seen before. The colour image is at at: https://warthunder.fandom.com/wiki/K...4th_sentai.jpg Regards, Clint |

Nakajima Ki-84 https://www.ebay.com/itm/31367729584...sAAOSw5-phQ8Pq Regards, Clint |

Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Hello,
Currently on ebay is a photo of a Nakajima Ki-27 (I think) at: https://www.ebay.com/itm/25528903170...oAAOSwgA1hvuiW It has the Hiragana character No (26) on top of the tailplane and the band on the rudder is not unlike that worn by Ki-27 of the Tokorozawa flying school. Can anyone say whether the aircraft does belong to that unit? Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Hello,
Currently on ebay is a photo of more Tokorozawa Nakajima Ki-27, in the foreground a machine with Hiragana Su (47) at: https://www.ebay.com/itm/26547281477...wAAOSw5Plhydll Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Hi Clint
My knowledge of Japanese is basically nil (perhaps even minus zero to be honest) Never bothered to understand the script. Can you explain to me what these inscriptions stood for (ie 'No' and 'Su')? Also wasn't the famous airfield in Japan called Tokorozawa? Cheers Stig |
Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Stig,
Yes I mispelt the airfield in the first post and then copied it in the second. Damn.Tokorozawa it is.No & Su are, quoting from the Starkings book on Imperial Japanese Army flying Schools 'Higana charecters ....used occasionally as a system in order to indicate an order sequence similar to the western use of the alphabet (A,B,C etc). So No & Su are respectively the 25th and 47th syllables in the Higana system and indicate the 25th and 47th aircraft of the Tokorozawa Flying School. Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
No worries Clint
Thanks for the explanation. So these signs are actually a symbol identification system. That also explains the numbers you wrote after each symbol. Since the Japanese used "normal" digits as well, I wonder why they used symbols here... Ah yes, and then we have that book..... :) Cheers Stig |
Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Hello,
Currently on ebay is a photo of a Nakajima Ki-43-II with US Markings at: https://www.ebay.com/itm/37384835724...AAAOSwPHhh0JvQ Further damaged Japanese aircraft can be seen at: https://www.ebay.com/sch/m.html?item...anese&_sacat=0 and US aircraft at: https://www.ebay.com/sch/m.html?item...itaria&_sop=10 Regards, Clint |

Hello,
Currently on ebay is a photo of a Tachikawa Ki-9 at: https://www.ebay.com/itm/12508648413...cAAOSw2fZh1l0Q Does anyone have any information on the significance of the three stripes on the cowling ring above the Katakana symbol Ho? Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Hello,
Currently on ebay is a photo of a Nakajima Ki-27 at: https://www.ebay.com/itm/25533805550...YAAOSwJ1dh5UQv I don't recognise the tail marking. Can anyone identify the unit of the machine? Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
(Ki.27 photo) the 2 diagonal stripes could be 5th Sentai on Nates to 8/42 ( white = 2nd Chutai) based in the Tokyo area, then on Ki.45s to 1943.
Nick |
Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
(Ki.9 photo). The sloping bars on the top wing were carried by at least 2 Instructor's Schools in Japan presumably for extra identification, the white bars (a black cowling was standard) may be flight markings (?)
Nick |
Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Hello Nick,
Thanks for both replies. Looking at the Ki-27 photo after your reply I now notice what appear to be a red outline to the white bars which I'd previously overlooked. So 5 Sentai it is. Regards, Clint |
Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
