Luftwaffe material on a memory stick from UK - Brexit effect

Hi,

Was just hit by the effect of Brexit - Received a memory stick with Luftwaffe documents (which makes this post qualified in this thread! :)) from UK. The Swedish customs charged 20 p as import VAT and £ 7 as handling fee...

Will be interesting to see if UK Customs make similar charges when the memory stick is returned.

Congratulations on getting mail. Post (mail) here as ... example ... taken up to three months, two months, 35 days, or not yet arrived. Mail sent within city takes just record of six days.

I have a book coming from the UK. This morning I already got the bill from customs. 9% import VAT on the value of the book and shipping/handling cost plus €13,- custom fees (+ 21% on these fees). A total amount of €27,25.

People in the UK will have the same problem the other way around.

Well I’m trying to buy an aviation book from the EU to the UK and the sellers post office in the EU won’t even send it at present saying it’s “too difficult”. I sent two large books from the UK to the US just before Christmas and it took 1 minute to sort out and pay for it 1st class tracked for £25, no trouble going that way. I do wonder sometimes.

I think this belongs in the “General” section.

I live in Ireland and have ordered quite a few books from the UK recently. All have arrived quickly with no additional charges.

Great-eBay purchases up to £135 are now subject to VAT to clear customs. A purchase of €29 gets €6.80 VAT. Thanks Brexiteers

On the upside I’ve just saved €300 on an impulse purchase and bought a strimmer from the UK with the money instead. Doesn’t fit quite aswell on my bookshelf but will hopefully do a better job of keeping my field in check :D

Books are 0% VAT rated in the UK. Therefore if you buy books abroad there is no extra charge when they arrive in the UK.

Not sure how it applies to electronic media, guess it is still 20%

I love paper even more now

I think that the UK government have taken VAT off eBooks (or announced the intention). Beware, though. It’s not just VAT, sometimes Customs open parcels, none too delicately, to check the contents match the declaration and then charge you about £8 for doing so. It’s happened to me twice with cd-audiobooks coming from the USA, so no doubt “taking back control” will mean the same for packages arriving from the EU.

Perhaps the additional costs of goods coming from the EU will encourage UK based individuals to buy UK made goods and for more to be manufactured in the UK. At the end of the day supply and demand makes a market.

One lives in hope Andy but I wouldn't hold my breath! It will adversely affect the eBay.de/be photo & the memorabilia markets though

Damn right, very sad too. I guess the best way is going to be to acquire a tame friend in Europe you can send stuff to and then onwards to the UK . Hmmmm, just so happens my best man now lives in France :) I have a cunning plan....

Writing, if the heading is accurate, from “Cork, Ireland” it must be a little easier to take a detached view of the UK’s prospects!

Hi Nick,

Mallow actually. I'm just trying to be objective. If prices become prohibitive then sales will drop/stop so if someone can offer goods at competitive price they will get the sales. I know it is overly simplistic and as Chris says above I wouldn't hold my breath but problems tend to create solutions - eventually.

Cheers

Hi,

Yes and my last bought directly in UK was in last december 2020 before the brexit.

We have not pay such expensive fees.

Now we have in France, GErmany or Nederland good sellers. We will go to their shops

The rate we’re going over here, could you start organising Red Cross parcels?

Serious question, as I can't keep up with the changes in the shipping, VAT, and Customs charges everywhere happening (it seems to me) every day: Has it reached the point where it's cheaper (no VAT or Customs charges on this side of the pond) to ship from the EU (or the U.K.) to the U.S. and then from here to final destination in the U.K. (or the EU)?

Just curious. I know that postage rates from the U.K. and from Germany to the U.S. have gone up but it doesn't seem as bad as the increases on the other side of the Atlantic.

And you could send us vaccine in exchange.
