Airport identification
1 Attachment(s)
Hi,
please does anyone know the name of the airport or the unit in the photo? On the back of the photo is the date: July 1943 Thank you for any information! Regards Tony |
Re: Airport identification
This looks like a line up of Fw 190 A-6 somewhere "An der Kanal Küste", if we are to trust writing across the photo.

Re: Airport identification
Maybe Woensdrecht?

Re: Airport identification
John and sidney, thank you both very much for your quick reply.
Regards Tony |
Re: Airport identification
Have you got a unit as this might make things easier as in all honesty, this could be anywhere
|
Re: Airport identification
Chris, you're right, there are no details in this photo that could help with identification.
But maybe someone knows this photo and will help me find the answer. Thank you Tony |
Re: Airport identification
I looked again and compared it with other pictures of Woensdrecht. That shed on the right hand side is a 99% match. I am pretty sure this is II./JG 1.

Re: Airport identification
That's great!
John, thank you very much for your help. |
Re: Airport identification
If you have Mombeek's JG 1 or Dutch Airfield book you will see the wooden shed on other pictures
|
Re: Airport identification
I have a great book by Eric Mombeek "DEFENDING THE RECH". On page 149 is a photo of Fw 190 at Woensdrecht Airport. You're right - it's similar. But I'm not sure. Aircraft II.Gruppe JG 1 had a painted emblem "Tatzelwurm". In my photo I do not see this emblem.

Re: Airport identification
One other thing to consider are such airfield constructions were a standard design-for example the hangars at Triqueville were found elsewhere
|
Re: Airport identification
Chris, sure, but the combination and looks of the whole scene is quite convincing.
